Special to the Star-Herald
I cannot stress enough how very important it is to bring your pets inside during this kind of weather. I look outside and think of all of the animals struggling to stay warm. It makes me want to cry.
Have you seen the check off for State of Maine Taxes? It is called “The Companion Animal Sterilization Fund” and will save lives by:
• spaying/neutering cats and dogs
• preventing unwanted litters
• lowering shelter intakes
• lowering shelter euthanasias
• reducing the number of feral cats
• reducing dog bites

Having your pet altered is the most important and responsible thing you can do for them and for your community. We often hear of people breeding for the money. If you are going to breed your dog for the money, you are in the wrong business. Just go and speak to any reputable breeder. They don’t do it for the money, they do it for the love of the breed and maintaining breed standards.
As for cats, there are just too many of them and not enough responsible, loving homes for all of them. I once said “if we had a shelter the size of an airline hanger, we could fill it full of cats!” That is so very true, but once the hanger was full, then what? Who would care for them, where would they go? It all starts with responsible pet ownership, and we all must do our part.
If you are looking for a friend for life, visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We have many altered cats available for adoption. We are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. or give us a call at 764-3441.
Please do the right thing by altering your pets.
