Wildcats avenge Caribou loss

    PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Houlton took an early 16-15 lead in Monday night’s game against the Presque Isle boys’ varsity team but the Wildcats’ used the inside-outside tandem of Adam Kingsbury and Logan York to earn the 54-50 win.
    Presque Isle jumped out to a 35-23 lead by halftime and Houlton never got closer than five for the remainder of the game.
Kingsbury led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds. York added 14 points including four three-pointers and five assists and Russ Mortland added nine points.
Drew Farrar led Houlton with 19 points.
The Wildcats fell 64-42 to Hermon on the road Saturday. Presque Isle kept things close in the first half, trailing by only seven at halftime, but couldn’t stop freshman Colton Gross, who led the Hawks with 20 points and eight assists.
Derek Helms added 13 for Hermon and Zach Deabay put up 11.
Kingsbury led Presque Isle with 17 points and Mortland added 10.
Earlier in the week the Wildcats avenged an earlier loss to Caribou with a 40-33 win Wednesday night.
Presque Isle took the lead for good in the second quarter and never led their opponents closer than seven the rest of the way.
Mortland led Presque Isle with 13 points followed by Kingsbury with 10.
Kyle Corrigan paced Caribou with 10 points followed by Jeremiah Fitzherbert with eight.
The Wildcats end their season at 9-8 and are in 10th place in Eastern Maine Class B as of Tuesday’s Heal Point Standings.
Washburn 63, Ashland 53
In other boys’ hoop action Washburn took a 10-point decision over Ashland Monday night.
Matt Connolly helped keep the Beavers ahead in the fourth, netting 12 of his 17 points. Adam Thompson led the way with 20 points and Alex Morrow added 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Jeremy Tarr led Ashland with 21 points and Lucas Belanger put up eight.
Washburn moves to 8-6 on the season and into ninth place in Eastern Maine Class D. The team begins a busy final week, traveling to Limestone yesterday and Mars Hill tonight in a 5:30 p.m. start. The Beavers wrap up their season Thursday night hosting Fort Fairfield beginning at 7 p.m.
Van Buren 89, Ashland 83 (OT)
Van Buren’s Ben Doucette tied the game at 79 with a buzzer-beating three-pointer that sent the game into extra minutes last Wednesday. He added seven points in the overtime to pace the Crusaders.
Ashland led by 10 at halftime on their home court but Van Buren put up a furious second-half comeback completed by the three-pointer that came after a lane violation negated a free throw that would have put the Hornets up by four with six-seconds left.
Doucette led the Crusaders with 41 points while Riley Lizotte added 24, and Alex Martin tossed in 16.
Curtis Belanger led Ashland with 42 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Tarr added 18.
Ashland falls to 7-9 on the season and moves into 18th place in Eastern Maine Class D. The Hornets wrap up the regular season at Katahdin Thursday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
