ASHLAND, Maine – An Ashland woman appeared before Judge Bernard O’Mara via videoconference Feb. 20 for her arraignment on charges of aggravated criminal OUI in connection with a fatal motor vehicle accident just days before that claimed the life of her fiancé, 48-year-old Ashland resident George Tozier Sr.
Nancy Lauren McKay, 41, was unable to make bail and remains behind bars at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton, awaiting her next court appearance. Bail was set at $25,000 surety or $5,000 cash.
Police believe McKay struck Tozier with her car, then broke into a home near the accident scene, where she was found hiding under covers on a couch in the residence. The couple had been spotted at Freem’s, an Ashland bar, hours before the accident. Tozier reportedly left on foot, with McKay leaving a short time later in her car.
Police indicated Tozier sustained a broken neck when he was struck and died instantly. McKay’s car was totaled. It was found in a snowbank on the opposite side of Route 227. When police found McKay, she was determined to be inebriated and appeared quite confused, claiming she had no recollection of earlier events.
According to the district attorney’s office, McKay is scheduled for a status conference in Superior Court on March 23 at 8.30 a.m. on the OUI charge. Other charges could be brought, pending further investigation.
