PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The winner of a recent Presque Isle Historical Society fund-raiser is accustomed to making decisions of a historical nature on a daily basis in Easton.
Town Manager Jackie Bradley, the winner of a fund-raising raffle held by the society, got to have her cake and eat it too. Bradley’s purchase of the ticket was done more in support of the society’s efforts than in hopes of winning. She was pleasantly surprised when she was selected to receive the cake.
“It was wonderful – a lovely cake, hand-delivered to me,” said Bradley.
The cake was considerably more than Bradley could eat by herself, so she shared with others.
“I shared with my family, the town clerk and members of the Highway Department,” said Bradley. “It was delicious and everyone enjoyed it.”
“The Presque Isle Historical Society has been selling raffle tickets since December for a chance to win a homemade Lady Baltimore cake, to be personally delivered to the winner by Nancy Fay, the baker extraordinaire,” said Kimberly Hall, spokesperson for the society.
According to Hall, Fay, of Presque Isle, donated the cake and her cooking expertise to the historical society for this fund-raising event.
“The winner was chosen at the monthly meeting of the Presque Isle Historical Society on Feb. 7. The lucky individual was Jackie Bradley, town manager of Easton,” said Hall.
Hall described the cake as “an old Southern favorite with four layers of white cake with a coconut-bourbon filling of pecans, raisins, candied cherries and coconut and was slathered with a boiled frosting on the sides. The society was pleased with the total amount raised with the raffle.
“The historical society made $215 from the fund-raising event,” continued Hall.
The cake was delivered to Bradley around Valentine’s Day – a rather fitting time to be receiving such a scrumptious dessert.
The Presque Isle Historical Society, whose mission is to study, promote and preserve the history, local culture, heritage and physical artifacts of Presque Isle for future generations, was pleased to take part in such a fun fund-raising event.
The historical society currently operates the Vera Estey House Museum, gives guided walking tours of downtown and is in the process of restoring the historic fire station.
