BRIDGEWATER – Virginia Lee Welch, 91, of Westbrook, formerly of Bridgewater, Maine, died Friday, May 4, 2007, at Springbrook Health Care Facility in Westbrook. She was born March 28, 1916, in Bridgewater, the daughter of Bernard and Lora Grindell Welch, and lived her entire life in that town, which she loved, until illness drew her to Portland and then Westbrook to be closer to her son and family. Virginia's colorful personality and independent spirit were legendary to all who knew her.  She was an accomplished pianist and piano teacher for many years.  Virginia was a long-time Baptist who drew strength and courage from her faith.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Stuart and Margaret Welch of Westbrook; four grandchildren: Wade and his wife Lisa Welch of Old Town; Heather Cyr and her husband Rob of Old Town; Matthew Welch and fiancée Chloe Zaug of Boston; and Laura Welch and fiancé Jay Bosse of Brooklyn, New York.  She also leaves behind a niece, Joyce Wilder of Presque Isle, a nephew, Wayne and his wife Loretta Hutchinson of Pennsylvania, a cousin Barbara Swimm of Monticello, ten great-grandchildren, and several grand-nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful to the dedicated and loving staff at Springbrook, who became like an extended family to Virginia.  Her roommate, Helen Fontaine, was a loyal and dear friend.
A visiting hour was held from 2:00 to 3:00 on Saturday, May 12, at the Duncan Funeral Home in Mars Hill.  Funeral  services followed with Rev. Mark Hartley officiating. Interment at Smith Cemetery, Bridgewater.   In lieu of flowers those who wish may make a donation to a children's charity of their choice in her memory.
