Local teams wrap up season: Many teams in quarterfinals, Ashland goes for regional title

As summer begins to roll its way into Aroostook County, the spring sports season is wrapping up with local athletes competing in some of their final games for 2007.

Presque Isle, Ashland, Central Aroostook and Fort Fairfield each had teams moving on to the quarterfinals on Thursday, June 7 for baseball and softball this year; with the Ashland and Fort Fairfield baseball teams moving on to the semifinals.
For Class D baseball quarterfinals, Ashland’s top-seeded team for the East hosted a game against Central Aroostook’s eighth seeded team. The game stayed close, but the Panthers were not able to hold off the Hornets, with Ashland taking the 3-2 win.
Fort Fairfield, seeded fourth, took on Southern Aroostook at their home field and claimed an early lead in the first three innings. The Tigers only allowed one run to be scored and claimed the 4-1 win.
In the Class B softball quarterfinals, Presque Isle, seeded fourth, hosted a game against Medomak Valley. The game was tough from the start, with the Lady Wildcats giving their all; but after a rough fifth inning, the ‘Cats were not able to pull ahead. Medomak Valley took the win at 9-1.
In Class D softball quarterfinals, Ashland’s 11th-seeded team traveled down to Greater Houlton Christian Academy. GHCA was seeded as the number-three school for their class in the East, and though Ashland gave it all they had, GHCA took the 11-2 win.
On Saturday, June 9, Ashland’s baseball team hosted the semifinal game against Fort Fairfield. After another tough battle to stay on top, Ashland took the win with a three-point lead at 4-1. The Hornets traveled to play the Deer Isle-Stonington team, seeded in third position, on Tuesday, June 12 at the Mansfield Stadium in Bangor. The Eastern Maine Class D champion will play at St. Josephs’s College in Standish on June 16 at noon. for the state title.
