Officials with TD Banknorth and the Northern Maine Community College Foundation have announced plans to host their annual golf tournament at the Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield on Thursday, Aug. 16, in memory of Peter G. Hunt, a well-known Central Aroostook businessman and member of the NMCC Foundation board of directors, who passed away unexpectedly on June 28.
Hunt, of Fort Fairfield, was owner and president of the Harry’s family of businesses, including Top of Maine Insurance Co., Harry’s Honda and Harry’s Motor Sports in Presque Isle and Harry’s Sales and Service in Caribou. He was instrumental in the organization of the first tournament hosted collaboratively by TD Banknorth and NMCC in 2006. He was intimately involved in the planning of this year’s event.
“In his role as a trustee of the NMCC Foundation, Peter G. Hunt was a driving force behind the success of this golf tournament. With his recent passing, TD Banknorth and the NMCC Foundation would like to dedicate this year’s tournament in his memory,” said Michael J. Kelley, executive vice president of TD Banknorth, NMCC Foundation board member and key organizer of the upcoming tournament.
“In addition to this year’s tournament being in Peter’s honor, TD Banknorth has announced that the first scholarship given from the TD Banknorth Inc. Scholarship Fund in 2007-2008 will also be in memory of Peter G. Hunt.”
Hunt, a founder of the United Insurance Group (UIG), served as chairman and CEO of the collaborative group of Maine independent insurance agencies until his retirement from that post in 1995. Afterwards, he formed U.V., Inc., a commercial insurance agency. He also consulted with many insurance companies and agencies within the Maine marketplace.
In addition to his service on the NMCC Foundation board, Hunt was involved in several other community and civic organizations, among them the Patriot Mutual Education Foundation Investors Council, member of the Aroostook Partnership for Progress, chairman of Community General Hospital in Fort Fairfield, Fort Fairfield Housing Authority and the Fort Fairfield Community Development Board.
“Peter G. Hunt was a strong supporter of NMCC and of higher education. He understood the critical importance of ensuring access to higher education for the people of this region as a means of bettering their lives and the economic livelihood of our state. We were fortunate to have Peter’s support both as a member of our Foundation board and as a leader in the Aroostook County business community. As the golf tournament was a key project of Peter’s, it is most fitting we hold it in his memory,” said NMCC President Timothy Crowley.
The TD Banknorth Golf Tournament to benefit the NMCC Foundation, which Hunt played such a critical role in organizing, was a huge success last August with more than 40 teams competing in the event. More than $20,000 was raised to support student scholarships at Northern Maine Community College as a result of the tournament and dinner auction that followed.
