Taking Aim

TAKING AIM — Think the sport of biathlon is just for those Spandex-clad racers who train year round on their skiing and shooting techniques? Think again. This past Saturday the Nordic Heritage Sports Club in Presque Isle hosted a citizen’s biathlon event, during which competitors of all ages and experience levels combined shooting with either running or walking for a combined time. Newcomers to the sport started the afternoon with an hour-long, learn-to-shoot clinic staffed by athletes and coaches of the Maine Winter Sports Center. Young kids even got to try their hand at the sport during the tennis ball biathlon event. The evening was finished off with a barbeque and, for some, a few runs through the sprinkler to cool off. Here, nine-year-old Sam Kaszas of Fort Fairfield takes aim with his air rifle. For more information about programs and events at NHSC call 762-6972.
