Tryout dates slated
SAD 1 Athletic Director David Heald has announced tryout dates for high school and middle school fall sports teams. On Monday, Aug. 13, high school golf tryouts get under way at Presque Isle Country Club at 3 p.m., girls and boys cross country tryouts will be held at 3 p.m. at the high school and fall cheering tryouts are scheduled at the PIHS upper gym from 4-6 p.m.
For the Presque Isle Middle School Wildcats girls and boys cross country tryouts will take place beginning Monday, Aug. 20 at the Johnson Athletic Complex from 3-4 p.m.

Bonville wins truck pull
Jason Bonville was the winner of this year’s Gary Fox Big Rig Memorial Pull, held at the Northern Maine Fair last week.
Rhett Fox, Gary’s son, made the presentation of the trophy, which was donated by the Parker McLaughlin family.
Mountain bike event planned for women
The Nordic Heritage Sports Club in Presque Isle will offer an all-levels mountain bike clinic for girls and women on Sunday, Aug. 12 from 1-4 p.m.
The goal of the clinic is to give riders more confidence on their bikes. Clinic participants will learn various biking skills, basic bike maintenance, and get tours of the great network of trails available to the public at the NHSC. The clinic costs $10.
Use of the trails at NHSC for biking, walking, and winter sports is free and open to the public. For more information about this or similar programs, call 762-6972.
Competitions set this weekend in Houlton
The County Open Half Marathon and Relay will be held Saturday in New Limerick beginning at 8 a.m. The County Open Classic 22-mile bicycle race will take place beginning in Houlton at 2 p.m.

Youth XC training to be held at NHC
Youth cross country training for youth in grades 4-6 will be held Saturday at the Nordic Heritage Center. Contact Eileen Carey at 227-4114 for more information on times and registration.
Nordic walking clinic
An introduction to the sport of Women’s Nordic Walking will take place at the Nordic Heritage Center on Wednesday, Aug. 15 from noon to 1 p.m.
Those interested should meet at the NHC Welcome Center, located on the Fort Fairfield Road in Presque Isle. Instruction on using poles to improve body health with low impact, and a woods walk will take place. Poles will be provided.

Scramble to benefit turf project, emergency fund
The first KeyBank “Wildcats” Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, Aug. 25 at Presque Isle Country Club. The proceeds will be used to support the new Field Turf Project at the SAD 1 Stadium Field, as well as the SAD 1 Student Emergency Fund.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top men’s and women’s teams for both gross and net. There will also be prizes for the first hole-in-one, a putting contest, a longest drive contest and closest to pin on the par-three holes.
A barbecue lunch will be provided by Star City IGA.
A shotgun start will get the tourney under way at 10 a.m. Golfers must check in by 9 a.m. The minimum team handicap is 30. The registration fee is $120 per team. To register, call Steve St. Pierre at 764-9423.
Fat Tire Festival slated
Nordic Heritage Sports Center will hold a Flat Tire Festival at the facility on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22.
Friday night’s activities will include a Mountain Bike Biathlon, pasta dinner and bonfire. Saturday will feature mountain bike races (cross-country and downhill) and a barbecue. For more information call 762-6972.
