    Look out for those black and white cats!!! My neighbor called the other night, their boxer had been sprayed by a skunk. All I could think was ‘glad that wasn’t my dogs!’ But you guessed it, not two days later, two of my own dogs got sprayed. Skunks are moving and getting ready for winter, minding their own business, when out of nowwhere come DOGS. Their only line of protection is that smell. My hound mix, Tucker, got it so bad he smelled like fuel. Wouldn’t you think they would learn?

    DAISY, the St. Bernard, walked in the parade during the Westfield Jubilee August 25. He was part of the Central Aroostook Humane Society entry. To see adoptable animals, go to the facility at 26 Cross Street in Presque Isle.

    I thought before I get too many more phone calls about skunky dogs, I would post the “Skunk Recipe.”  This is tried and true, it really works and is well worth the money spent:
• 1 Quart Peroxide;
• 1/2 cup baking soda; and
• 3 TBS dish soap.
    DANGER!  Do not store this, it will explode! Wet the dog, rub this in, let it set and rinse. Skunk smell be gone!!!
    If you have dogs who spend a lot of time outside, the cold weather is upon us. Now is the time to do your maintenance on your shelter and make sure the shelter is stuffed with clean, fresh straw. Straw is the best insulator, it is hollow and will keep your dog toasty warm. Be sure your shelter is built off the ground and not too big so the dog can keep it warm with his body heat, yet not so small that he can’t move around. The best place for your dog is inside with you, but if that is not possible, it is your responsibility to make his outside living quarters warm and comfortable.
    Story Time at the Central Aroostook Humane Society will be Saturday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. at the shelter. We offer a story, a snack and a tour of the shelter. Please bring the kids and support the Central Aroostook Humane Society’s efforts to educate our children and teach responsible pet ownership.
    See you at the Forum this weekend for the annual Fall Craft Fair. Please visit our booth and check out our new T-shirts.
    If you are looking for a ‘friend for life,’ please visit the animals available for adoption at the Central Aroostook Humane Society. All of our cats are vaccinated, altered and feline-leukemia tested. All dogs are vaccinated and altered. Our business hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or give us a call at 764-3441.
    Please have your pets spayed or neutered!!
