‘Shawl Stories’ exhibit planned at Visions

HOULTON — The Southern Aroostook Cultural Arts Project, (SACAP), and the Domestic Violence Response Program of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, (HBMI), have joined together to present Ksuwosun Akonutomakonol: Shawl Stories. The HBMI Shawl Project was begun in 2006 to honor Native American victims and survivors of domestic violence. Each shawl has been created by members of the native community; with each shawl color representing a facet of domestic violence. The exhibit on display in SACAP’s Blue Moon Gallery is an act of hope; hope that by remembering yesterday’s sorrows we can fashion a better future.
The exhibit’s opening reception will be held at the Blue Moon Gallery, located in Visions at 66 Main Street, Houlton on Friday, Oct. 5 from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit will be on display from Oct. 5 through Nov. 24. Regular business hours for the Blue Moon Gallery and Visions are Tuesday through Thursday 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Friday noon until 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
A candlelight vigil, coordinated by HBMI’s Domestic Violence Response Program will be held at the Blue Moon Gallery on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. The Blue Moon Gallery is a project of the Southern Aroostook Cultural Arts Project.
