QUILT IN PROGRESS — Members of the Pioneer Quilters, a newly-formed quilt group, sort out the details of a baby quilt they’re working on. Counter-clockwise, from left, are: Marlene Lawlor, Marg Melvin, Mellissa Fuller and Lois Morin.
“We’re making quilts,” says Lois Morin while behind her, a trio of ladies consort on the details of a baby quilt and; around the room, a rainbow of hand-stitched examples adorn the tables.
Morin is one of the ladies who is helping organize a newly formed quilt group, The Pioneer Quilters. The group meets each Tuesday at the First Congregational Church for an afternoon of sewing and friendship.
“We’re just in the organizational stage right now,” added Morin.
Last Tuesday was Pioneer Quilters’ second meeting. They said the idea came from a similar group at another church; a conversation about quilting got the Congregational Church ladies considering their own potential.
“We just got to talking about it one day,” said Lynn Tweedie. “I [liked the idea because I] was interested in learning how to quilt.”
The group had so much fun at their first meeting, they decided to make it a habit.
“We’ll work on [quilting] projects for the church and for our own personal projects,” said Tweedie.
The group currently includes quilters with varied levels of experience.
“It’s an eclectic group,” said Morin. “We’re sort of a mixed bag. We’ve got beginners, experienced people and all stages in-between.”
“We all learn from each other,” added Tweedie.
And have fun in the meantime, says Morin.
“We all have a good time,” she said. “And it [working together] is a good way to get projects finished.”Pioneer Times Photo/Sarah Berthiaume
QUILT GROUP — From left, Lynn Tweedie and Lois Morin talk shop during last week’s meeting of the Pioneer Quilters at the First Congregational Church on High Street.
Pioneer Quilters plan to make and sell quilts with proceeds to benefit the church. They’ll also take orders, said Morin, for any buyers interested in particular sizes or colors. Some of the members’ projects will be on display at the upcoming church bazaar, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10.
Pioneer Quilters meet every Tuesday (except Nov. 13) at the High Street church starting at 1 p.m. Dues are by donation. For more information, contact Morin at 521-0435.
