SHERMAN — The Sherman Area Memorial VFW 2299 and Ladies Auxiliary meet on the second Friday of every month at the Post in Stacyville. Meetings start at 6 p.m. with a supper followed by a 7 p.m. meeting. The Junior Girls Unit, the only one in the State, meet on the same day at 2:30 p.m.
Auxiliary Treasurer Jessica Bouchard and her husband Alan, are working on getting information to form a Sons of the VFW group for boys.
“We look forward to starting this unit through our Post so that sons can take part like the Jr. Girls do,” said Auxiliary President Allison Roy.
Upcoming events: The post currently working on a Patriotic Coloring Contest for Veteran’s Day. Katahdin Trust Company has donated two $50 savings bonds for the first-place winners broken down by grades K-3 and 4-6. Second-place prizes in these two age groups will be provided by the Post and Auxiliary. Entries will be judged on Friday, Nov. 9 at the regular meeting and the winners will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 11 at the Veteran’s Day Dinner. The art will then be posted on the wall at Katahdin Trust Company, Patten. This contest is for children in grades K-6 in both Benedicta and Katahdin elementary schools.
Also on Sunday, Nov. 11 from noon to 2 p.m. there will be a Veteran’s Day Dinner at the Post. The dinner will include roast pork and all the fixings. Cost is $7 per adult, $3.50 for children under 12.
Following dinner, there will be a Veteran’s Day program at 2:30 p.m.
The post also plans a Buddy Poppy Drive for that day as well. Christmas cards will be available for people to sign; the cards will be sent to the troops overseas.
