The Easton Elementary School put on a special Veterans Day Assembly, after first serving a Thanksgiving dinner to the veterans, their wives and also to the Easton senior citizens. The guests were treated to a slide show of those who were in the service and their recent pictures and the program was opened with members of the Future Farmers of America, with flags, leading the elementary school children into the gymnasium while they sang “Those Who Served.”

The Easton Jr/Sr. High School band played the “Star Spangled Banner,” followed by the group repeating the Pledge of Allegiance. Superintendent Frank Keenan welcomed the group and especially the veterans.  He read a letter from President George W. Bush honoring all veterans and also read a proclamation on making Nov. 11 the official Veterans Day and the rest of the week for special recognition.
First introduced to the crowd was Easton’s only Gold Star Mother, Freda Dionne, whose son, Fred Seaborn, died in the Viet Nam War. Then each veteran there was introduced and took seats at the front of the gathering. The Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard were all represented. During the introduction each arm of the service was honored with the singing of that special service’s song. Five Student Council members each read the meaning of the insignias of each branch of the service, followed by the group singing “This is America.”  Three High School students read essays they had written for the assembly. They were: Ariana Babineau, Sydney Trask and Taylor Lawrence. Two of the Easton Cub Scouts, along with a reading by Paul Dudlely, gave a demonstration of the folding of the flag while the other Cub Scout members looked on. This was followed by the playing of “Taps” by Luke Fuller and Holden Turner.
The schoolchildren ended this special program with the singing of “We Remember.” The colors were retired to the song “Stars and Stripes Forever” and all of the children, and many of the crowd, passed by the veterans  to shake their hands. It was a very meaningful show of honor. Those veterans attending were: Sheldon Hull, Merle Lamoreau, Jr., Roland Michaud, Robert Stickney, Dan Turner, Steve Whittaker, Ronald Webb, Bernard Hussey, Gold Star Mother, Freda Dionne, Vaughn Carter, Clair Carter, Lance Taylor, Bob Clark, Duncan Beaton, John Trask, Jeff Kimball, Dennis Anderson, Shayne Anderson, Torr Harmer, Jennifer Morin, Michael Craig, Fred Barnes, Troy Finnemore, David Cowley, Cindi Kimball and Jeff Kimball.  Mr. Keenan then read the names of those who have passed away or could not be there:  Edward Johnson, Wendell Clark, Raymond Cullins, Marvin Ladner, John Doak, Clarence Richardson, Leo Nadeau and Darrell Page.

Easton native receives award
Jeff Carter, of San Francisco, Ca., formerly of Easton, has recently been informed that his play, “Homeland Prayer,” has been selected by the New England Theatre Conference Committee to receive the John Gassner Memorial Playwriting Award for 2007 along with $1,000. The award and check was to be presented to Carter at the convention in Waterville Valley, N.H., but because of the distance and  cost Carter was unable to attend. His play, “Homeland Prayer,” takes place somewhere in rural middle-America where the violence of the Iraq war hits home. The play focuses on Darden, a rural building contractor and his wife, Lynn, whose only son, Danny, lies critically wounded in a nearby V.A. hospital, the victim of a roadside bomb. His wife and other members of his family await news of his fate. Through conversations in several different settings they attempt to deal with this horrible turn of events while trying to maintain some semblance of normal day-to-day life.
Carter is the son of Clair and Eldora Carter, of Easton, and graduated from Easton High School. He spent three years at the University of Maine in Presque Isle and was very active in the theatre group there. He also studied theater in the former American Center for the Performing Arts in Boston. Carter has had his plays produced at the Boston Center for the Arts, the Open Door Theatre of Boston, the Illustrated Stage in San Francisco, the Alternative Theatre Ensemble in San Rafael, as well as in theatres in Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and Marin, Ca.; Brockport, Long Island, N.Y.; and in Grand Junction, Colo. He is a five-time finalist for the National Ten Minute Play Contest at the Actors Theatre of Louisville.
Pastor honored
Assistant Pastor Vaughn Martin pins a Servant Heart Award pin on the lapel of the Easton Wesleyan Church Pastor Matthew Maxwell, at a recent church service. The congregation at the Easton Wesleyan Church nominated Pastor Matt for the Pastor of the Year Servant Heart Award. This special award comes from the Christian Tools of Affirmation. A Servant Heart is marked by the selfless love and service that Christ modeled and is lived out in response to all God has done for us. It is an act of worshipping and glorifying God 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Easton Wesleyan congregation nominated Pastor Matt by completing these three sentences: God has blessed our congregation through our pastor by. . .; Our pastor shows a servant heart when . . .; and We see Jesus Christ in our pastor when . . . Here is an excerpt from the comments received about their pastor. “God has blessed our congregation through our pastor by providing a shepherd that cares about the young and senior members of our congregation. He has a great deal of vision and enthusiasm and has been providing opportunities for  us to reach out to our community and to those within our congregation by way of small groups and other ministries. We see Jesus Christ in our pastor when we see his concern for the spiritual wellbeing of the people in our church and community. Although Pastor Matt did not take the 2007 Pastor of the Year and the special trip, he is to be looked up to as a special man and dedicated shepherd of his flock.”
