On Aging: Thanksgiving thanks

Sorry I’m late with this. I know Thanksgiving Day is over and done with for this year, and a thanksgiving list usually comes ahead of the event. I’m old and slow. But I’m still thankful for a lot.     I am thankful to live here in Aroostook County. I like it because of the geographic location. My husband and I spent the winter of 1952-3 in Camp Polk, La. According to the calendar winter came, but there was no snow. Christmas cards show that we are supposed to have snow, and we do up here.
Aroostook County is also the people who live here. I am thankful for those among us who care about people. The older I get, the more of my friends need help with food, heat and transportation. You young people who are helping can trust me that you are appreciated.
I am thankful for a lot of things I learned about only in recent years. My wheel chair, rolling carts to transport laundry and cooking stuff, my long “picker” with which I pick up laundry I drop, a duplicator which enlarges recipes so I can read them, a two-foot long shoe horn which helps me put shoes on which I cannot reach and there are more than I have room to list.
Recently I was thankful to be among the oldest of four generations at the family Thanksgiving table.
This year I am particularly thankful for our medical community. At age 79 and with high blood pressure and diabetes, I was a “high risk” patient. However, I decided to trust them and risk an operation.
My trust was well placed. In three days I was well enough to go home. In three more days I was bored enough to cook cookies from my wheel chair.
Thanksgiving is a good day.
