Young man’s courage tops 2007 news

A look back
In a look back over reports for 2007 that were important to the residents of Easton, the first that comes to mind is the benefit potluck supper held for a young man, Sean Daniels, who lost part of his left arm in a potato harvest accident this fall.

Over 300 people donated and participated in that special event. Daniels returned to school and just months after the accident was on the J.V. basketball team, inspiring teammates with his abilities on the court, despite his injury.
Other important events for the citizens were the several meetings held at the Easton Jr./Sr. High School concerning the law passed forcing many schools in Maine to consolidate, including our schools. This concern is still not settled.

Visits
Ruth Ladner of Berlin, Germany, flew home to spend the Christmas holidays with her mother, Arlene Ladner. She will return to Germany on the 10th of January. Arriving at the Ladner home on Wednesday, Dec. 26, were Arlene’s son, Marvin, and wife, Donna, who drove here from their home in Sydney, N.Y., and another son, Allen, and his daughter and her husband, Sarah and Harold Schlatter, who flew in from their homes in Monrovia, Calif. They all enjoyed a belated Christmas celebration. Marvin and Allen and family will return to their homes the day after New Year’s Day.

Sympathy
Our sympathy goes out to Robin Fowler and family on the death of her husband, 51-year-old Jon “Bum” Fowler, who died unexpectedly at his home, while talking to his grandson on the phone. Sympathy also goes out to his mother, Lindy Fowler, who has lost her only child. Lindy moved to Easton from Pheonix, Ariz., to be near Jon, a few years ago. They both have homes on the Mahany Road. Jon was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from Loring Air Force Base. He decided to make Maine and Easton his home, where he was employed by Maine Public Service in Presque Isle for 11 years. Besides his wife, Robin, and his mother, both of Easton, he leaves: a daughter, Carrie Matheson, and her husband, Jason, of Caribou; a stepdaughter, Rinde Hamlin, of Mapleton; two grandsons, Brandyn and Kameryn Matheson, of Caribou; and two stepgrandchildren, Ethan and Mason, of Mapleton. A casual memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Maine Public Service Operations Building at 10 Parkhurst Siding Road in Presque Isle. A military committal service was held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery in Caribou with Pastor Maxwell officiating. As Jon faithfully donated blood to the American Red Cross, those who wish may donate in his memory to the American Red Cross, 141 State Street, Presque Isle, ME 04769 or to the Central Aroostook Humane Society, PO Box 1115, Presque Isle, ME 04769.
Our sympathy also goes out to the family of Lawrence Hammond Sr. who passed away at his home with his family beside him, on Saturday, Dec. 22.  Sixty-six-year-old Larry was the son of Ernest and Mildred Hammond and lived all his life in Easton. He attended Easton schools and married Betty Adams on Sept. 28, 1968. He had been employed by Carroll Patten’s Garage, in Presque Isle, and Flewelling Farms, of Easton. He was a member of the former Easton Lions Club and Easton ATV Club, riding even as he carried his oxygen tank. He loved four-wheeling and working on cars. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Betty, of Easton; and his three sons, Lawrence, Jr. and his fiancee, Rachel Corriveau, of Frenchville; Douglas and his wife, Kim, of Easton; and Kenneth Hammond, of Sedgewick; also his two daughters and sons-in-law, Geneva and Jim Jones, of New Sweden; and Lisa and Dana Cyr, of Easton. He leaves six grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home in Fort Fairfield on Wednesday, Dec. 26, with the Rev. Greg Jackson officiating. Interment will be in the spring at the Estes Park Cemetery. Those who wish may contribute in his memory to the Easton Future Farmers of America, C/O the Easton Elementary School, PO Box 44, Easton, ME 04740.
