    CRYSTAL – Maurice Almon Porter, 92, died peacefully Jan. 3, 2008, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness, at Houlton Regional Hospital. He was born Aug. 20, 1915, in Crystal, the son of Andrew and Sona Grace (Ham) Porter.
    Maurice graduated from Island Falls High School, the valedictorian of the Class of 1932. He married the love of his life, Leithea "Bubbie" (Varney) in 1944, and together they raised five children. He farmed potatoes for more than 50 years, along with his brother, Arthur Porter. He was a past master of Island Falls Masonic Lodge No. 206 AF & AM, a past member of Daniel Randall Chapter and belonged to the Maine Trappers Association. He was a member of the advisory committee of F.H.A, Aroostook Federation of Farmers, and served as selectmen and school board member for the town of Crystal for many years. Maurice attended United Baptist Church of Island Falls and enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, good times at the camp on Mattawamkeag Lake, and raising a large garden, but most of all he valued being with his family.
    He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Leithea "Bubbie" Porter of Crystal; five children, daughter, Elaine Nester and her husband, Michael, of Mesa, AZ, son, Robert "Pete" Porter and his wife, Judy, of Island Falls, son, Stephen Porter and his wife, Sharon Edwards, of Crystal, daughter, Lynne Lewallen and her husband, Paul, of Whitsett, NC, and daughter, Mary Smith of Crystal; seven grandsons and eight great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Marie Carlson and Anneliese, Aidan and Asher, Eric and Amy Carlson and Cordelia, Jonathan and Jessica Porter and Makaelyn and Camden, Joseph and Misty Porter and Payton and Nolan, Jeremy Porter, Jason and Kristin Porter, and Andrew Smith; one brother, Raymond and his wife, Elizabeth Porter, of Adams, MA; two sisters, Annie Jane Smith of Island Falls, and Jeanne Smallwood and her husband, Robert, of Patten; and   several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Richard Sr., Oakley, Wayne, Ralph, Arthur, Harris and Colby.
    A Masonic service was conducted by Island Falls Lodge No. 206.  Funeral services were held at Island Falls United Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating.  Spring interment will be at Island Falls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund of Island Falls United Baptist Church, P.O.
