AUGUSTA – FRED K. GILDRED, SR., Sgt. First Class Retired, 83, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2008, at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. He was born in Houlton on June 30, 1924, the son of Frederick and Effie (Tidd) Gildred.
A WWII veteran, Fred enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1941 at age 17. He served in the Pacific Theater in the Peleliu and Okinawa Campaigns. He also served 19 years in the Naval Reserves and an additional nine years in the Army National Guard, retiring as Sgt. First Class in 1984. He was also a member of the VFW. Fred was a shop foreman and lithographer at Houlton Pioneer Times. In 1960 he moved his family to Belgrade and worked as a lithographer at the Augusta Print Shop and part time at the Kennebec Journal. Fred enjoyed spending time at his camp at West Forks with family and friends, especially sitting around the campfire playing his guitar and singing. Other interests included carpentry and woodworking (he built his own home in Belgrade), camping, fishing and hunting.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Douglas Tidd, Ralph Gildred, William and and sister, Thelma Gildred. Fred is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maxine (Wright) Gildred; his children, Fred Gildred of Augusta, Judy McLellan and husband Bob of Windham, Terrence "Nick" Gildred and wife Elaine of Marlboro, MA and Charlotte Seckler and husband Ed of Casco; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at a later date at Maine Veterans Cemetery. Those who wish may make donations in Fred's memory to a charity of their choice. Maxine and family would like to thank all of the staff at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta for the loving care that was given to Fred during his stay. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast.
