PRESQUE ISLE – Wearing red to promote healthy hearts in women brought out a lot of cameras, with groups and individuals posing for snapshots throughout the day, with the goal of spreading awareness and having a bit of fun while doing so. But for some participants, prizes for their efforts made the day that much more memorable.
The Education Department at The Aroostook Medical Center held photo contests during Wear Red Day, on Friday, Feb. 1. Businesses, schools and day cares were invited to submit photos of their employees/students wearing red. Businesses and schools who submitted photos were then entered into drawings for $100 prizes to be used for wellness. A heart-healthy basket was presented to the winning day care.
Winning $100 prizes were: Acme Monaco Corp., of Presque Isle, in the business category; and Mill Pond School, of Hodgdon, in the school division. Winning a heart-healthy basket was Tiny Tots Daycare, of Easton, in the day care category.
According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Wear Red Day is a day when Americans nationwide wear red to show their support for women’s heart disease awareness. This observance promotes the Red Dress symbol and provides an opportunity for everyone to unite in this life-saving awareness movement by showing off a favorite red dress, shirt, tie or Red Dress pin.
