Hodgdon High School students receives MPA principal’s award

    HODGDON – Shannon Martin, daughter of Steve and Peggy Martin of North Amity and a senior at Hodgdon High School, has been selected to receive the 2008 Principal’s Award, announced Principal Clark Rafford. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Image     Throughout her years at Hodgdon High School, Martin has truly distinguished herself in the classroom, on the playing field and as a leader in the school and community. Her activities and/or positions of leadership include: Class Valedictorian, National Honor Society president for one year, student council vice president for one year, class vice president for two years and student council treasurer for one year. She has served on the student council for four years, been a member of the National Honor Society for three years, was selected as an All-Aroostook Band member for three years. She has been a member of the Dollars for Scholars Committee for two years, played varsity basketball for four years and was captain for one year, played varsity soccer for four years and was captain for one year. She was selected as Student of the Month for three years, and coached Pee Wee basketball for two years.
    Martin was the recipient of the Kodak Young Leader’s Award, The Society of Women and Engineering Award and she was the Principal’s Leadership Award Nominee. In addition, she has received many academic accolades in her classes throughout her entire school career. “She has led a very active life and yet has still able to maintain a high academic standard. This speaks very highly of her character and her innate ability to multi-task,” added Rafford.
    Martin, Rafford and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Events Center in Bangor on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
    The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque, a pin and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. Mr. McGowen and Mr. Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors in the Association. The scholarship recipients are chosen randomly from those seniors who are in attendance.
    The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 140 Maine public and private schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
