Houlton – Margaret "Peggy" Ruth Hobbs Gordon, 78, died April 14, 2008, at her home in Houlton, Maine, where she resided for 54 years. She was born September 17, 1929, in Bangor, Maine, the daughter of Ellsworth Joseph and Althea Fae (Smith) Hobbs of Mattawamkeag.
Peggy attended school in Medway, graduated from Bangor High, went on to Eastern Maine General School of Nursing and graduated from Ricker College in 1978 at 49 years of age with a degree in Health and Family Life Education. She was very active in sports during her high school and college years and throughout her life. She engaged in many community activities, those she particularly enjoyed were involvement in the SAD #29 School Board, AAUW and the Extension Service. Most recently, she has enjoyed her exercise group and her book club. Her many passions included square dancing with the Houlton Promenaders, traveling with her husband and family, and playing bridge. Among all of her passions, the two most prominent in her life were welcoming people into her home with open arms and helping with each and every newborn baby.
Peggy is survived by her children and their families; Suzanne Marie Gordon of Westfield, Maine her husband Gordon Hammond, her children Jessica, Meg and Jamie and their families, their father Dick York; Michael Virgil Gordon of San Antonio, Texas his wife Gail, their daughter Chelsea and her family; David Irvin Gordon of Oakfield, Maine his wife Glady, their sons Jeremiah and Gabriel; Nanette Gordon-Cramton of Thetford, Vermont her husband Casey, their daughters Sarah and Ellie; Christopher Joseph Gordon, his wife Jill, their children Jack and Grace; Patrick Hobbs Gordon of Houlton, Maine his wife Krista, their children Hansel and Vivian; adopted daughter Marlynn London; great- grandchildren Cassy Benjamin, Sabra and Justus Scott, Emerald Gordon Wulf, and James Diehl; her devoted brother Paul Hobbs and his wife Marjorie, their family of Peterborough, NH; sister-in-marriage Amy Davis Frasier, her husband Roger, their family; and all the rest of her loving family and friends. She was predeceased by her cherished husband Foster "Curly" Irvin Gordon.
At Peggy’s request, there will be a graveside service at the Mattawamkeag Cemetery June 15, 2008 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, friends may make gifts in Peggy’s memory to the Foster I. and Margaret R. Gordon Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park Street, Houlton, 04730.
