Local community event for Memorial Day Weekend

Danforth –     Memorial Day services will be held at the Honor Roll. For more information call 463-2426.
Houlton  –     In Houlton, Memorial Day events being organized by the American Legion Post 47 will start at 9:30 a.m. with a ceremony at Soldier’s Hill in the Houlton cemetery on Smyrna Street.
    At 10:30 a.m., all units will assemble at the TD Banknorth parking lot for the parade. Among those participating are representatives from the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department and the Houlton Police Department and 152nd  Guard unit.
    The parade will pause at the bridge to lay a wreath in honor of those who died at sea.
    The route will continue through Market Square to Monument Park where there will be a ceremony honoring those who gave their lives in service to their  country. Houlton High School band will perform during the service at Monument Park.
    After the ceremony, hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks will be served at the American Legion post on the Bangor Road.
    Anyone interested in entering a float in the parade can contact the American Legion after 3 p.m. at 532-9046.
Island Falls –     Memorial Day service will begin at the Municipal Building at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 26. Cemetery service to follow. For more information call 463-2587.
Oakfield –     A Memorial Day parade will be held in Oakfield, starting at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26 at the Community Center and proceeding through town to the grocery store.
    After the parade, a short ceremony will be held at the Oakfield cemetery.
Patten –     Patten Woman's Club will be sponsoring the Memorial Day Parade 10 a.m. on the Monday, May 26.
    The parade starts at the Dick Somers house on Houlton Street. The parade will go through town and and proceed to the cemetery for a ceremony.
    Also, the Patten Historical Society will be open at 10 a.m. and will serve coffee to any veterans marching.
Sherman Area –     The Sherman VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary 2229 will have Memorial Day service on Sunday, May 25 at noon at the veterans’ monument in Sherman. Taps will be played. Special guest speaker will be Rep. Henry Joy.
