NORTH AMITY, Maine – The A.E. Howell Wildlife Conservation Center Inc. and Spruce Acres Refuge will be holding their first open house of the season on Saturday, June 7.
“The center will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We have a lot of activities – something for all ages,” said Arthur Howell, director of the 50-acre refuge that serves as a rehabilitation center for wild animals.
Howell said there are about 40 animals at the center, including an eagle, bear and a baby moose.
“Baxter the bear is one of the largest animals at the center. He weighs over 500 pounds. Then we have a baby moose that was brought to us recently. A sportsman found it. ,” said Howell.
The open house will also serve as a fund-raiser put on in memory of a Houlton girl who recently passed away.
“We have a special event planned, with proceeds going to the Morgan Cowett Fund. Morgan loved animals and funds raised will be put toward creation of a trail we’ll name Morgan’s Trail,” said Howell.
The center, located 14 miles south of Houlton, plans several more open house events this year.
“We’re looking at putting on about five this year, spread out from now through early fall – end probably around October. With high fuel prices causing many to reconsider their vacation plans, we’re hoping folks in Aroostook County will consider a trip closer to home and come check us out during one of these events,” explained Howell.
