July is shaping up to be a very busy month for the Houlton animal shelter. Look for us in the 4th of July parade, we will hope to have several Shelter dogs “out for a walk” so you can visit with them and they can get a little exercise. This is always a great opportunity for us to showcase our critters and help them find new homes. We have many wonderful dogs available for adoption right now, and of course you already know about our cats! If we could train cats to line up and march down Main Street, we would probably have a mile long parade all by ourselves! But since we can’t, we’ll plan a few other events for you to visit with our cats.
July 5 the Humane Society will be serving Strawberry Shortcake in the park! This takes a lot of work on the part of our volunteers, from picking to cleaning to preparing the berries, not to mention the hours in the park, and I just want to let them all know how much we appreciate their hard work. I’m sure you will also appreciate the hard work when you dive into these delicious delicacies!
On July 12 there will be a huge adopt-a-thon, litter and food drive at Wal-Mart in the parking lot. Our sincere appreciation to Wal-Mart for all they do for community programs and especially all the help they’ve been to the shelter over the years. This year we will be adding a very exciting component to the day, Schwans is going to hold a truckload sale in the parking lot, with a portion of their sales proceeds going to the Shelter.
I don’t know if you are familiar with Schwans products but they offer everything from the finest seafood to creamy delicious ice cream to everything in-between – trust me, I am a Schwans fanatic – not only is their food good, but most is “freezer to oven” preparation and when you work 60+ hours a week, this is a convenience I really enjoy. We look forward to partnering with Schwans on this event.
Please plan to come to Wal-Mart on the 12, buy a bag of cat litter and bring it out to the parking lot and donate it (if you can), or just stop by and visit with the kitties and maybe even take one home! We have so many wonderful pets needing homes!
On July 19 we will be traveling to Fort Fairfield for another adopt-a-thon and then on July 26 and 27 we will be taking critters to the Aroostook Centre Mall for yet another adopt-a-thon. We are really hoping to place some of our residents in new homes!
Also on July 19, please plan to attend the dinner at the Littleton Agricultural Museum – their dinners are always awesome and right after dinner there will be a cake and pie auction for the animal shelter. If you are interested in baking a cake or pie, you may bring these right to the museum the night of the event – try to bring them in a dish you don’t want returned or put your name on the dish! Last year we hosted a similar event and it was a huge success with several bidders fighting over raspberry pies. We really appreciate the Museum volunteers allowing us to partner with them and we hope you all support their efforts to keep this wonderful museum going.
If you have ever wanted to volunteer for the Shelter and don’t know what to do, there are just 1,000 ideas out there. Right now there are so many animals and so little money that what we need the most is more fund raisers so if you have an idea for a picnic lunch, a bottle drive, a bake sale, a yard sale, a naughty nightie party (I just wanted to see if you were paying attention), you don’t need our permission to host an event!
We want to thank the local restaurants for their participation in Dine Out for the Animals this past Tuesday, it’s great to have so many people supporting the cause and we really appreciate each and every one of you and all you do. Have a great week and Happy Fourth of July!
