Caribou was busier than usual during the week of June 23 – 26, as postmasters from all over the state arrived for the annual Postmaster’s Convention.
The convention travels around the state, and post office employee, Judy Mann, said it was about time they came up here again. Matters of business on the convention’s agenda included training on different procedures including labor relations issues dealing with unions, and bulk and periodical mail acceptance, as well as updates on any changes to the procedures.
Mann said it’s just to “make sure they’re doing things in the correct manner.”
The postmasters also held officer elections, including the re-election of President Scott Boardman, of Camden. It wasn’t all about business, however, as those attending were able to have a little fun with an annual convention golf tournament, which was won by the area manager.
All those attending enjoyed the opening session when the colors were presented by the Young Marines, end everyone was also treated to a performance of the National Anthem by Jr. Maine Potato Queen, Hannah Hebert.
Mann, who has served as the state editor for the National Association of Postmaster of the United States Maine Chapter 29, and has “been just about everything,” said that this convention had the largest turn out in years. She said that the event usually draws around 70-75 people, but this year 101 postmasters were in Caribou for the convention. There were also many family members who made the journey as well, but Mann was unsure how many of them were here.
Mann said “everyone who was up here was very impressed at the town of Caribou, and couldn’t believe the hospitality,” specifically mentioning the many posters about the event, put up around town by the Caribou Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She said that overall, everyone had a great time.
