Special Boy Scout efforts
On Thursday, July 17, several members of Washburn Boy Scout Troop 177 volunteered at the museum grounds. This is a service project of Troy Wilcox and is part of his Career Opportunity Summer Award from the Mitchell Institute.
Troy chose this project as he has an interest in the museum estate due to this being part of his Eagle Scout badge, where he planted trees, shrubbery and other landscaping efforts. During this project, Troy saw the need of redoing and restoring some of the flowers, bushes and replacing mulch to what he had done for his Eagle badge.
During this restoration project, Troy organized the group of Scouts in order to complete the project, and he also held some of his own fund-raising to pay for the flowers and mulch. The Scouts helping him earn Service Hours through their efforts and those assisting included: Taylor Skinner, Kody Brissette, Stephen Kinney, Keagan Page, Curtis Thompson, Daniel Roy and Cameron Preston. Also helping were adult leaders including Troy’s dad Don, his brother Adam, Mike Thompson and Greg Page. Troy also did his fair share of work as well as supervising.
Troy was granted the George Mitchell Scholarship when he graduated from Washburn High School in 2007 and will be entering his sophomore year and the University of Maine at Biddeford in September. Troy made the dean’s list for both semesters of his freshman year. He is also an assistant scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 177 in Washburn.
Troy is currently working for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife out of the Enfield Regional Office which is near Baxter State Park. He works on surveying streams for Brook Trout and, while working, he’s learning valuable skills from the state of Maine fisheries biologists.
Eagle Scout Award earned
Jensen Reed, the son of John and Tracy Reed, received his Eagle Scout award, the highest rank attained in the Boy Scouts of America Program. The ceremony was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Caribou on Saturday, June 14. Also included was a celebration of Jensen’s achievements.
Scoutmaster Larry Harrison conducted the ceremony and awarded Jensen the rank of Eagle Scout. He also read letters received from several federal, state and local dignitaries, as well as vice principal at WDHS, Ron Ericson. All congratulated Jensen on his many hours of hard work and service to the community.
David Smith and Don Wilcox spoke at the ceremony of Jensen’s contributions and experiences in the Scouting program, his attendance at church youth programs and in the community. Eagle Scout recipient Troy Wilcox presented the Eagle Scout Challenge and Oath to Jensen during the ceremony.
During the ceremony, Jensen recognized the many people who have helped him through his Scouting career and with this Eagle project. As special recognition to Scoutmaster Larry Harrison, Jensen presented him with the new Scouting Award Mentor Pin.
Jensen’s Eagle project was one that benefited the town of Washburn by painting and refurbishing the town tennis courts and cleaning, painting walls and also some great “Beaver Basketball” symbols in the Washburn Recreation Center.
Jensen has been in the Scouting program since the first grade when he became a Tiger Cub in Presque Isle. He became a member of Troop 177 in 2002.
