OXBOW – There is a lot more going on at a little shop located Deep in the Woods.
Oxbow Wreaths opened in 1986 and added the Deep in the Woods Shop in 1999, carrying a wide selection of quality Maine-made products. Owners Steve and Judy Sherman keep coming up with new ideas and ways to display their inventory. The enlarged showroom has proven to be a huge success as the couple continues to change things around when new product comes in.
Customers can enjoy a friendly, relaxed atmosphere with a cup of tea or coffee while they browse. Free gift-wrapping is also offered.
The newest artisan in the shop is Thom Cote, ‘Carvings by Cote’, of the Artist Nook in Limestone. Cote is a fourth generation carver who learned traditional wood sculpting in St. Jean Port Joli, Quebec. Several of his pieces are on display, and custom ordering is also available.
Beginning in August, the shop will have vintage/collectible pieces available for sale. Products will include pewter lanterns, glassware, crocks and collectible dolls.
The most popular item so far this year has been the book “Bound for Munsungun – The History of the Early Sporting Camps of Northern Maine” by Jack Ahern. Other popular products include Chickadee Candles (a fragrant gel candle) and drying racks manufactured by Robbins Lumber of Searsmont.
“We are always getting comments that they are the best candle every purchased,” said Judy Sherman about the gel candles. “They are longer burning, cleaner burning, and the fragrance can’t be beat.”
The Shermans will be showing some of their product at the Northern Maine Community College Fall and Winter Sports Show at the Forum due to the success of last year’s exposition. Deep in the Woods products most recently showed at the Northern Maine Fair.
“We took a variety of items from our shop to the ladies’ pavilion for nine days,” said Judy Sherman. “The exposure was fantastic … The quality was what impressed people the most along with the fact that most of our items are made right here in Aroostook County.”
Hours of operation for January to October are Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. or by appointment. In November and December the shop is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
