Book store to host children’s author

HOULTON — York's Bookstore in Houlton is hosting an appearance by author Wendy Ulmer on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 12:30 p.m. Ulmer will be discussing her new children's book, “A Isn't for Fox: An Isn't Alphabet.”
Ulmer’s book has been described as an innovative approach to teaching. The idea grew from a writing assignment the Arrowsic resident gave to her freshmen English class.
"Some of the kids were having some difficulty writing with much detail," Ulmer said. "So, I asked the class to come up with three paragraphs to describe who the people in their stories are, by who they are not — 'there goes Jane who doesn't like cats and doesn't work at the Laundromat,' and so on," she said. "I began to think about how I could present this to younger kids, and the rhyme just started coming to me."
Ulmer is a former English and music teacher. Her writing has been published in Ladybug magazine and her first children's book was “A Campfire for Cowboy Billy.”
York's Bookstore is located at 19 Market Square in Houlton. For more information on Ulmer’s visit, call 532-3354.
