PRESQUE ISLE – It will be food, fun and games this weekend as Graves’ Shop ‘n Save hosts its first-ever Kids Fun Day.
The inaugural event will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 outside the store. All proceeds will benefit the Logan P. Graves Foundation. Attendees can purchase two hotdogs, a bag of chips and a soda for $3.
Games geared for children 12 and under will be featured, as well.
“We’re going to have a dunking booth, obstacle course, beanbag toss, milk bottle throw, a portable basketball hoop, and a duck pond,” said Don Samiya, store manager. “Some activities will take one ticket, others will take two, and you can buy two tickets for $1. Prizes will be available.”
At 3 p.m., the winning raffle ticket for the log playhouse that’s presently displayed in the grocery store parking lot will be drawn. Tickets can be purchased that day prior to 3 p.m. The cost is one ticket for $5, three for $10, or seven for $20.
“We have the playhouse donated every year and raffle it off,” Samiya said, “and we – the owners and department managers – thought, ‘What could we do to make it a little more exciting and involve the community a little bit and create some excitement? This is what we came up with.”
As the games are outside, Samiya said the Kids Fun Day is weather permitting.
The Logan P. Graves Foundation was created by Bob Graves Jr. and his wife, Lynne, to honor the life of their son, who passed away in December 1998 after courageously battling brain cancer. The purpose of the Foundation is to raise money for other organizations whose mission is to assist children who have life-threatening illnesses by treating the illness through direct treatment or research, and/or assisting families who live far from where their children receive treatment enabling them to stay with their child while the child undergoes treatment.
The Foundation’s second purpose is to fund the award of scholarships to qualified graduates entering qualified four-year institutions in the United States, preferably in medicine and related fields of study.
Each year, the Foundation donates money to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, located at the Maine Center for Cancer Care in Portland. The Maine Children’s Cancer Program offers outpatient consultation and treatment for children diagnosed with cancer.
