Hello everyone. Have been away visiting my daughter Kathryn, commonly called Kathy. It was great weather and I appreciated that. Today is overcast but there was a great turnout for Houlton Water Company’s free hot dog, potato chips and drink affair in the square. Saw a lot of my friends there and it was a nice get-together. Thanks to one of our workers here we enjoyed some yellow squash. Yellow squash is easy to cook—I slice mine thick and put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. Then I eat it with butter but others cook it on top of the stove or it can be steamed too and is quite nutritious. Thanks, neighbor.
Irene Harrington is back to work and we are happy to have her. Irene was in last week but isn’t quite up to par yet. She said to report that the Meals on Wheels is solely in need of volunteers, drivers and helpers. If you can help even for an hour or so, it would be greatly appreciated.
Noticed Floyd Muncey Sr.’s death in the Bangor Daily News last week. Floyd Jr. used to live here on the first floor until the death of his wife a few years ago. Our sympathy is extended to Sonny, as he was called.\ Did you read that college campuses are going tray-less? I didn’t know what that meant until I read the article. People are trying to conserve and that is one way to do it. Think about it. If you do not have a tray, it won’t have to be washed and water is saved.
Janice McCarthy had surgery on her foot on Tuesday. This was done a while back, but was unsuccessful. This time we hope it took and Janice is back on two feet soon.
Joyce Miller’s mother, Pearl Ruth is in Houlton Regional Hospital following a stroke. Pearl is a volunteer with RSVP in the past and has been for a number of years. We wish you well.
Tuesday, September 7 is National Grandparents Day. To all guardians and grandparents, great-grandparents and all who take care of children, have a wonderful day.
Helena Dickinson’s grandson, Billy Yates from Raymond, spent several hours with her in July. Billy is the son of Nancy L. Yates, Helena’s oldest daughter.
Congratulations and best wishes to Avery and Amy on their wedding at the Church of the Good Shepherd Saturday, August 30. Amy is the daughter of Brian and Charlene Henderson. Charlene is our liaison and Brian is a most worthy helper with their sons, Ben and Adam and another daughter Christine.
Helena Dickinson also had company August 16 with her nephew Raymond Moore. Raymond’s wife Wendy accompanied him as well as daughter Andria and Andria’s friend. The Moores are from Carmel, he is the son of Helena’s sister Wilhelmina, of Topsfield, now deceased.
The Labor Day weekend is upon us as I write. It is my wish that you all have many hours of goodwill, fun and time spent with loved ones. If you are traveling, get home safe and sound.
Thomas Hogan, son of Marion Hogan, was visiting her for a few days. Marion is always happy to see members of her family.
Our love and best wishes to friend Bill Roach, who is in a hospital in Bangor suffering from a heart attack. Bill, we love you, and wish you well. You are missed in the community and we our wish to get well is from all of us and soon.
Yvonne Blake, well known for her doughnuts and other good baked food, won $50 for her recipe for potato salad in the Chamber of Commerce during its recent contest. I’ve had her potato salad and I’d say it was a winner too. Congratulations to Yvonne.
You are invited: the parish of St. Mary’s and St. Paul’s at Island Falls is having a mission by the Redemptorist Fathers. The mission brings deep healing to our hearts. The mission runs from September 7-11. The evening Mass is 6:30 on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of that week. The morning mission is at 11 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday at St. Mary’s. For other times in Island Falls, please call 532-2871. You’ll be glad you did.
My thought for the day is taken from Psalm 55.22: “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee; He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”
Have a wonderful week.
