Babe Caron, the 30-year director of golf at Houlton Community Golf Club, chipped and putted liked the days of old on Sunday to carry he and his partner Bob Gray to victory in the second day portion of the annual Babe Caron Member-Guest Tournament.  
    Babe and Bob shot a 17 under par score in the howling wind to nip second place finishers Ray Mailman and Peter Danforth, who finished at 16 under par. Babe and Bob were the oldest team of the 40 teams competing, proving that experience and finesse can best youth and power.
On Saturday, Jerry York and Steve Hodgdon shot 10 under par in the afternoon to overtake eventual runner ups Jerry and Troy Adams and win the day one event of the tourney. The teams of Rick Goodwin/Andy Pierce and Tim Guy/Bill Boulier played consistently strong golf for two days and shared third place on both Saturday and Sunday.
In other events, Ben Goodwin rattled his opponent, brother Gabe Goodwin, with power and putting to win the final match and claim the 2008 match play Presidents Cup championship. Also last week, Marilyn Ellis defeated Mary Hatfield in sudden death playoff to win the Ladies’ Presidents Cup match play championship.
Next Saturday, September 13, the club will host the sixth annual “Rally for the Cure” for Breast Cancer Benefit Scramble. Although the field is full for the golf tournament, there will be a prime rib dinner that evening for all members and guests. World renown chef Joe Bergan and his crew will be cooking and serving the dinner.  There is room for only 64 diners, so please call before September 11 to reserve your spot. This is a great time for golf and Houlton Community Golf Club has a green fees September special – play nine holes for $12 or 18 holes for $20 any week day. Come out and take advantage of the beautiful weather and course conditions before the snow flies.
