SHERMAN – Lt. Cmdr. Vernon P. Daggett, U.S. Navy, retired, 79, died Sept. 13, 2008, at his home. He was born Nov. 2, 1928, in Island Falls, the first of two children to Asa "Phil" and LaVerne (Ingalls) Daggett.
     Mr. Daggett was a member of the 1946 graduating class of Hodgdon High School and joined the Navy, May 23, 1946. He went to boot camp and radio school in Bainbridge, Md., and then went to special radio school in Bainbridge Island, Wash., as a RMSN. During his 30 years of active duty, he served at the following duty stations: Port Blakely, Wash.; Adak, Alaska; Winter Harbor; Guam; Amagansett, Long Island, N.Y.; Bremerhaven, Germany; Istanbul, Turkey; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Newport, R.I.; Washington, D.C.; Okinawa, Japan; and Fort George G. Meade, Md. Mr. Daggett advanced to communications technician senior chief and subsequently earned a commission as a limited duty officer, ensign, Nov. 1, 1962. He was commissioned ENSLDO in 1972. After retiring from his naval career, Aug. 7, 1976, he lived in Rockville, Md., Warrentown, Va., and Herndon, Va., before moving back home to Sherman in May 2004.
    From his early childhood through the end of his life he enjoyed spending summer vacations at the family cottage on Pleasant Pond, Island Falls, where he enjoyed reading, golfing, crossword puzzles, being a handyman around the camp and spending time with family. Vernon was an avid golfer and got his only hole-in-one, Oct. 1, 1993, at Twin Lakes Golf Course, Chantilly, Va. He also was a diehard Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots fan and considered himself very fortunate to see the Sox win two World Series.
    He is survived by one daughter, Judy Lun of Germantown, Md., and her twin sons, Chris of Montgomery Village, Md., and Kevin of San Diego; two sons, David and his wife, Becky, of New Market, Md., and their son, Kyle; and Michael and his wife, Berta, of Bothell, Wash., and their two daughters, Becca and Kate; one sister, Judy and her husband, Bruce Parker, of Hinesburg, Vt., and their extended family; one aunt, Virginia Hobbs of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and her extended family; and two cousins, Jackie Sheehan of Newton, Mass., and Greg Clarke of Latham, N.Y. Vernon was very fond of his two nephews, Larry and Brad Parker; and his two nieces, Lori McKenna and Millie Couture and their families, all of Hinesburg, Vt. He is also survived by a very special cousin and caregiver, Jane Grant; and their loving felines, Maggie, Buffy and Xena. He also leaves cousins, Pamela Healy of Presque Isle, Karen Rodgerson and her family of Stacyville, Elery Grant and his family of Island Falls and Mike Grant of St. Petersburg, Fla. Vernon was predeceased by his parents, Phil and LaVerne Daggett; and his wife, Genevieve (Mullen) Daggett.
    The family expresses a special thanks to Dr. Philip Brooks and his staff at CancerCare of Maine and Dr. Donald Blagdon of Katahdin Valley Health Center for their love and care, and also the friends and family whose visits brightened his day.
