UMPI Distinguished Lecturer series kicks off

    Wednesday, Oct. 8, marks the beginning of UMPI’s Distinguished Lecturer series. At 7 p.m. at the Campus Center, journalist and filmmaker Darrell Dorgan serves as the first Distinguished Lecturer of the academic year. He will discuss everything from homesteaders and ranchers to Maine guides when he delivers his presentation, “Pioneering Spirit: How 19th Century Maine and North Dakota Helped to Shape a Future President.” For more information, call 768-9452.


UMPI hosts Technology Fair

    On Friday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tech Fair 2008 will take place at the Campus Center. The University’s MIS Program will present its 8th annual Technology Fair, covering technology needs and issues of interest to business owners, technology professionals, educators, students, and the general public. Zillman to speak at conference

    On Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., the Northeast Society for Human Resources will host its 12th Annual Employment Law & Human Resource Conference at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Campus Center. SAGE celebrates its 10th birthday

Reed Gallery hosts reception

    On Sunday, Oct. 19, at 4 p.m., there will be an opening reception for “Consider a Moment of Stillness” at the Reed Fine Art Gallery, Manhattan artist Risa Hirsch Erhlich comes to the County for the opening reception of her solo ceramics exhibition. She will give a brief talk and answer questions about her work. On Monday, Oct. 20, she will conduct a ceramics workshop with ceramics students. RC&D hosts wind conference

    On Tuesday, Oct. 21, form 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the St. John Aroostook RC&D will host a wind conference, “Increasing Energy Diversity and Independence: Growing Wind Power Generation in Maine,” at the University’s Campus Center. Officials from the Maine Public Utilities Commission, Natural Resources Council of Maine and National Renewable Energy Laboratory will offer conference sessions. UMPI celebrates 13th annual Science Day

    On Wednesday, Oct. 22, the University will celebrate the 13th annual Science Day with a guest lecture by Dr. Orrin Pilkey, a coastal erosion expert and professor geology emeritus at Duke University. At 7 p.m., Pilkey will discuss coastal erosion and sea level change in his talk “Beach Erosion: Human Influence on Coastal Environments.” For more information, call 768-9482.

University hosts blood drive

    The University will host its annual Fall Semester Campus-wide Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, Oct. 23, from noon to 6 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome or you can call to reserve a time in advance. The American Red Cross needs to collect 1,400 pints of blood each working day to meet the needs of people in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. For more information, call 768-9560.

Club hosts Haunted House at mall

The PE Majors Club will host a Haunted House at the Aroostook Centre Mall for two nights just before Halloween. The event is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25. Hours are: 4-8 p.m. Friday; 1-3 p.m. and 4-8 p.m. Saturday.This is a fund-raising opportunity for the club. Cost is $4 per person. For more information, call 768-9457.

Blue Jupiter to perform at UMPI

    “Hailed as the next shining star of a cappella vocal music,” Blue Jupiter will be performing a one-night, energy-packed, inspirational show at Wieden Auditorium on Saturday, Oct. 25, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Blue Jupiter has won numerous awards and most recently performed in “VH1’s Save the Music Event.” The show is free for students (with proper ID), $5 for non-students and adults. UMPI officials to re-dedicate hall

    On Thursday, Oct. 30, at noon, University officials will lead a formal re-dedication ceremony for Folsom Hall, which received major renovation work during the spring and summer to create energy efficiencies, update the building’s façade, and replace all windows and entrance doors. Following the ceremony, officials will offer community walk-through tours of the updated facility. For more information, call 768-9452.

Children invited to trick or treat at UMPI

    On Thursday, Oct. 30, from  6-7 p.m., there will be trick or treating at UMPI at both Park and Merriman halls. All children, 5th grade or under, are invited to participate in the 13th annual UMPI Trick or Treating Night. The students will be decorating Park and Merriman halls for Halloween fun.
