CARIBOU – Shirley C. Smith, 65, wife of the late Robert D. Smith, died September 22, 2008, at a Caribou health care facility following a long illness. She was born at Perham, April 14, 1943, the daughter of Millage and Marjorie (Maynard) Howe. She was educated in the Washburn school system. Shirley worked 30 years alongside her husband on the family farm then at their roadside stand “Smith’s Seedlings and Vegetables”. She attended the Perham Baptist Church and was very active and held numerous offices in TOPS. Shirley loved hunting and fishing, and over the years had brought home many partridge, several deer and moose. She enjoyed being in the outdoors and taking rides to spot wildlife. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family, which she loved being with her family and spent a lot of time laughing with her grandsons.
Surviving in addition to her mother Marjorie of Washburn are a son and daughter-in-law Robert and Siu Lin Lou Smith of Caribou and son, Ho Leung “Andy” Chan, a daughter and son-in-law Marjorie and Patrick Bither and their sons Levi, Jacob and Kevin Bither all of New Sweden; three brothers Richard Howe and his wife Joan of Perham, Freeman Howe and his wife Phyllis of Presque Isle and Donald Howe and his wife Barbara of TX; one sister Marilyn Van Scooter and her husband Albert of Washburn; a brother-in-law Henry LaPointe of CA; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Phillip and Barbara Smith of Caribou; two sisters-in-law Gloria Howe of Presque Isle and Charlotte Howe of Mapleton; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers Gary and Tom Howe and a sister Alice LaPointe.
Friends may call at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou, Friday, October 3, 2008, from 11 a.m. until time of services, which will be held at 1 p.m., from the chapel of the funeral home, with the Rev. David Moore, officiating. Interment will take place at the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to contribute in memory of Shirley may do so to the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Caribou. Envelopes may be obtained through the funeral home.
