United Methodist Women
The October meeting of the Mars Hill UMW was held in the church vestry on Oct. 15 at noon. There were 12 members present and seven guests, including two guests speakers.
After eating sandwiches that each one had brought, delicious desert and drinks were provided by the two hostesses, Joan Boone and Joan Walsh. The dining room and food tables were attractively decorated in a fall motif. Joan Walsh read a blessing and food prayer. Later, she introduced the guest speaker, Candy Richards, of the Limestone UMW, president of the UMW Northern District.
In August 2007, Candy attended the UMW National Seminar in Nashville, Tenn. She was chosen to represent the UMW Northern District. With such a large group from all over the USA, each one was asked to choose from one of the “areas of concern.” She chose “Health Care.” All week, she toured health clinics, food cupboards and homeless areas desperate for food, shelter and clothing. She said her prayer was for better conditions and for a more healthy environment. She was presented a special gift.
Joanne Worthen, from the Limestone UMW, spoke about her new position as treasurer of the UMW Northern District – a new undertaking in a new area of work. She was open for questions and discussion.
President Janice Footer opened the business meeting by welcoming everyone. She then led in the Purpose Pledge and prayer. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved as read.
The date of the Fall Craft Fair and Luncheon has been changed from Nov. 8 to Nov. 1. It will be held in the church vestry. Members discussed the craft fair, with plans to set it up on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 9 a.m. The meeting was adjourned after the benediction.
Guests from Limestone included Candy Richards and Joanne Worthen; from Easton were Eldora Carter, Glennis Craig, Marie Hewitt, Dot Beaton and Lindy Fowler. Local members in attendance included Janice Footer, Donna Brewer, Joan Boone, Joan Walsh, Elaine Bailey, Ruth Sylvester, Diane Ketchum, Goldie Folsom, Carol Guiggey and Clara Hussey.

Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 a.m. The special speakers were Meagan McClay and Danielle Cropley. Seniors at CAHS, Meagan is the state FFA reporter and Danielle is the state FFA secretary. They spoke about the activities they have participated in while they have been in FFA – locally, at the Big E and at the national conventions. The CAHS FFA chapter is the largest in the state of Maine, having been incorporated in 1936. There are currently about 60 members in the Mars Hill chapter.
Meagan and Danielle recently went to New York for a special FFA camp. There were officers from FFA chapters from throughout New England and New York. They learned about teamwork and about presenting workshops. This year, they plan to conduct FFA membership workshops at local schools that are interested in starting an FFA chapter.
They also plan to do more local events and introduce FFA to students in junior high.
