When making a Christmas list this year, why not think outside the box and include an item or two for those less fortunate in the community? Or perhaps make a donation on behalf of a loved one, giving an item to a nonprofit in their honor, then present the person with a card explaining what you’ve done. People and pets can use a little help from a ‘Secret Santa’ this year. Several area nonprofits have come up with ‘wish list’ items they can use this holiday season. Money tops the list, but in addition to monetary donations, organizations are asking for the following items:
• United Way of Aroostook’s annual toy project is the biggest Christmas event for the agency. The organization is collecting ‘new toys only’ for distribution to area children. Collection boxes will be placed around the city. To make a donation or for more information, contact 764-5197 or visit the UWA Office, 480 Main St., 3rd Floor, Presque Isle, ME 04769;
• Homeless Services of Aroostook can use bath and hygiene products, non-perishable food, cleaning products and supplies. Donations can be made directly to the shelter at: Homeless Services of Aroostook, Inc., PO Box 1753, Presque Isle, ME 04769, or phone 764-5114;
• The Battered Women’s Project is in need of several items, including: bedding, towels, diapers, phone cards, gas cards, gift cards, pots and pans, kitchen utensils, book bags and food of any kind, including fresh food and holiday food baskets. For more information or to make a donation, call 764-2977; and
• The Central Aroostook Humane Society is in need of a number of items, including: bleach, cat litter, laundry detergent, dog and cat treats, canned dog and cat food, blankets, cotton swabs, towels, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, toilet tissue, paper towels, garbage bags and a variety of cleaning products.
