CARIBOU — 2008 was the snowiest year ever recorded in Caribou by the National Weather Service. Many may be surprised, considering the severity of last winter, but there was a total of 177.7 inches of snow recorded for 2008 while 166.2 inches of snow were recorded in 2007. In fairness to 2007, it was the third snowiest year.    According to a release by the National Weather Service in Caribou, the 177.7 inches of snow that fell in 2008 surpassed the 166.5 inches of snow that piled up in 1972. The new maximum calendar year snowfall total was helped along by a record monthly snowfall in February (47.7 inches), a near record snowfall in March (47.1 inches) and a top 10 snowfall in December (38.7 inches).
2008 also goes down in the books as being the second wettest year on record for Caribou, according to the National Weather Service. Caribou received 52.83 inches of precipitation in 2008, only 1.7 inches away from the 2005 record of 54.24 inches of precipitation.
