Hoop summaries…

    The basketball courts were busy Monday night with girls’ games, as most of the local clubs didn’t fare too well, with the exception being the Houlton Lady Shires, who overpowered visiting Schenck, 68-39.
    The Lady Shires jumped to a 19-4 opening lead and extended it to 43-13 at halftime, rolling to the win. Vanessa Sanderson scored a game-high 16 points, while three teammates hit double figures, as well. Martha McPartland tossed in a dozen, while Courtney Putnam and Desiree Dow each had 10 points.
    In Hodgdon, the Lady Hawks were defeated 32-28 in overtime by the Washburn Beavers.
    The Lady Hawks held a 20-13 halftime lead and hung on to a 24-21 third-period advantage, only to watch it slip away, as Washburn’s Rebecca Campbell hit a shot with eight-tenths of a second left to send the contest into overtime. The Beavers edged Hodgdon in the extra period.
    Campbell finished with 14 points for Washburn, while Jillian London grabbed 10 rebounds and Kate Duff tossed in seven points for Hodgdon.
SHOOTS – SACS’ Liz Goodall shoots and scores against Katahdin last Wednesday. Goodall spearheaded the Lady Warriors’ third period run, as SACS pulled out the win by a basket.
    In Stacyville, the Katahdin Lady Cougars watched their 26-23 lead turn into a 10-point deficit at the end of the third, 39-29, as the Fort Fairfield Lady Tigers remain undefeated at 7-0.
    Olivia McNally scored 16 points, while JaLisa Moore added 10 more for Katahdin.
    In Mars Hill, the Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors trailed Central Aroostook from the onset of the game. At halftime, the Lady Panthers held a 21-13 advantage. Unable to get on track in the third, the Lady Warriors trailed 28-21. But, with over a minute to play, Southern Aroostook recovered late in the game, cutting the lead to 38-36 before Rachael Grew hit 5 of 6 free throws to seal the game, 40-36, for Central Aroostook.
    Grew scored 12 points in the game, while Vicki McIntyre dropped in 18 points and Kristen Long grabbed 10 rebounds.
    For SACS, Liz Goodall led the team with 16 points.
    On Saturday, the Lady Shires ran into a tough Calais team, falling 60-38. The host Blue Devils jumped to a 21-3 lead, but Houlton cut the scoring gap to 29-21 at halftime only to see Calais outscore them 16-8 in the third en route to the win.
    Sanderson netted 15 for Houlton.
    The East Grand Lady Vikings pulled out a 31-27 victory over host Easton behind Kelsey Daoust’s 23 points.
    The Vikes led 16-13 at intermission and 23-19 after the third to hang on for the win.
    In boy’s action, the Bears overpowered East Grand, 78-40.
    The Bears opened the game with a sizeable lead, 20-9 and doubled East Grand’s output in the second for a 36-18 advantage. In the second half, the Bears outscored East Grand, 42-22.
    Kaleb Dicker scored 21 points, while Seth Cropley netted 10 more for East Grand.
    The Lady Warriors overpowered visiting Easton last Friday in Dyer Brook, 55-14. The Lady Warriors jumped to a 30-5 halftime lead and cruised to victory, as 13 players scored for Southern Aroostook.
    Liz Bergan and Liz Goodall each scored eight points.
    In Stacyville, the Fort Fairfield Tigers came away still undefeated (7-0) with a 55-52 victory over the Katahdin Cougars.
    After the Tigers built a three-point halftime lead, 35-32, they stayed out in front (42-39 after the third) to hold off the Cougars.
    Ethan Qualey had the hot hand from the perimeter, tossing in five 3-pointers and finishing with 21 points. Brandon Robinson pounded in 13 points.
    Before New Year’s, the Lady Shires overcame a seven-point deficit in the second half and outscored Madawaska, 17-9 in the fourth to take a 50-43 win last Tuesday.
    Sanderson led the way for Houlton with 20 points, while Dow scored 10 and had six steals and Lainey Herring netted 10 more points.
    At UMPI, the Greater Houlton Christian Academy varsity basketball teams swept Calvary Chapel.
    In the girls’ game, GHCA held a 24-22 halftime advantage, spreading it to four at the end of three, 34-30. The Lady Eagles outscored Calvary, 17-9 in the fourth period.
    Kasi Parker scored 18 points and Kari Brewer tossed in 12 more for GHCA.
    The boys’ game was just as close, with the Eagles edging Calvary, 48-46.
    Calvary had built a 22-12 halftime cushion, but the Eagles’ Chad Duff spearheaded a third-period drive with 15 of his 20 game points to give GHCA a 32-29 lead, as they hung on for the win.
