AUGUSTA, Maine-Lake St. George State Park in Liberty is the site of the first “Take It Outside!” event of 2009-a children’s ice fishing derby on Sunday, Jan. 18, according to Gary Best, Bureau of Parks and Lands interpretive planner, under the Maine Department of Conservation. “Whether you have never been fishing or are an experienced fisherman, this is a great opportunity to spend a fun-filled day outside with a child,” Best said.
“We will provide everything you need to experience this exciting winter activity, including instruction, traps and bait. We’ll even cut the hole in the ice for you.”
“Take it Outside” is an initiative started by Gov. John E. Baldacci to encourage Maine’s children and families to reconnect with nature.
The ice fishing derby will also feature other winter activities to fill in the time waiting for the fish to bite.
A warming hut, coffee and hot chocolate will be available all day. Lunch is provided.
Prizes will be awarded for first fish, greatest length, total weight and more. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather.
To pre-register and for more information, call Lake St. George State Park at (207) 589-4255.
Other dates for other upcoming “Take It Outside!” events are:
