On March 4th, the Aroostook County Legislative delegation met with Governor Baldacci and Transportation Commissioner, David Cole, in the Governor’s office. A conference call was made to several locations in Aroostook to speak with community leaders (members of LEAD) concerning the construction of a highway segment to by-pass Caribou. Funds have been released to begin this project. Design and survey work will begin this year with construction beginning in 2010. Hopefully, this section will provide the momentum to jump start projects from Houlton to the St. John Valley. Every Wednesday at noontime Aroostook Legislators will be on a conference call to LEAD members to discuss current issues.
A Bill to Ban Hunting on Wild Animal Ranches attracted many citizens testifying either for or against. The Hearing was held by the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee.
Also creating much discussion was testimony to consider establishing standards for wood pellet manufacturers. This Bill was heard by the Natural Resources Committee.
It was a pleasure visiting with five Caribou citizens who were at the Capitol on Red Cross Volunteer Day, March 5th. I had the pleasure of giving them a tour of the Statehouse. They also viewed the House of Representatives in session as a guest in the House Gallery.
