Guatemala Trip — Social Work Professor Shirley Rush and four University of Maine at Presque Isle students took part in a Service Learning trip to Guatemala during their Winter Break. The group departed on Feb. 13 to spend a week in Guatemala serving as volunteers in community development projects. They raised nearly $12,000 to take part in the international service learning experience. In this photo, Laura Long, a senior social work major from Blaine, interacts with children at the Mayan kindergarten, Uk Ak, in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. On April 14 from 5-7 p.m. in the Campus Center, the group will host a Guatemala “Fiesta” for the campus and community. The event is expected to include a public forum, including a book discussion, students’ feedback about their activities in Guatemala, as well as food, music and photos.

The Presque Isle Redemption Center is a general drop-off for bottles to go to this project. The teachers/advisors for this trip are Washburn’s Mrs. Andrea Hallett and Chris Hallett of Ashland High School.
