    Haynesville — Ice left the river April 7.
      New sheriff — R.H. Whitney who was recently on the night police force has appointed deputy by Sheriff Thurlough. We congratulate our sheriff upon his excellent judgment in selecting so valuable a man for a member of his staff of deputies.
    Mr. Donovan — William Donovan, one of our well-known residents has returned from a very enjoyable trip to Lewiston and other places, where he visited relatives. Mr. Donovan makes these trips annually and certainly takes the right way of enjoying life, working hard during the summer on his large farm, one of the finest in this section and taking a trip every winter.
    Wanted $500 — The Soliciting Committee for the Soldier’s Monument will need about $500 more than they now have in sight, in order to dedicate the monument May 29 free of debt. The monument will cost $3,500 and a fraction over $3,000 has been pledged.

FOLDING GO-CART — Just in time for spring. Dunn Furniture Company has the fashionable Wagner quick folding go-cart for your infant. It opens and closes in one motion.

    Postal Service — The government economy wave instigated by Postmaster General James Farley, the first sign of which was felt here a few weeks ago, struck with a vengeance and so greatly curtailed service out of the local post office as to hamper business and cause a widespread complaint from all merchants. Four men are now doing the work of five and in the residential section only one delivery a day. Window service has also been curtailed.
    Island Falls — A costume dance was held in the community hall with a large crowd present. Music was provided by Martin’s orchestra. A prize of a bag of flour was presented to the most fantastic couple. Mr. and Mrs. Braley received the prize.
    Houlton — Phillip Callnan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Callnan of Cary’s Mills returned last week from Bangor where he had spent the Easter vacation at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Donald Dunphy.
    Monticello — Horace Porter who has recently had a new store built at the corner of Main and High streets expects to open for business on Wednesday. He will carry a good line of meat and groceries.
    Littleton — Mrs. D.L. Woodworth entertained a party of little folks at her home on the occasion of the 7th birthday of her little son, Eugene.

    In competition — The Centreville Legionnaires will play St. Francis Xavier of Antigonish, Nova Scotia for the Dominion Senior B Basketball title. Playing for Centreville are four former southern Aroostook players, Jack Dobbins, Gib Chapman, Gene McKeen and Ervin Stone. Paul Davenport is a member of the St. Francis team.
    Spear Speaking — Charles Fortier and Judith Gormley participated in the Spear Speaking Contest at the Putnam Gym on the Ricker campus.
    Trophies awarded — Captains and co-captains of the Pioneer Times Rec League basketball teams received trophies for the season. They are; Gary Crafts, Joe Barlock, Stephen Logan, Eugene Jewell, Bruce Reece, Dave Taylor, Val LeBel, Clem McGillicuddy and Rodney Herring. Glen Larson was the director of the league.

    Honor parts — Houlton High School principal, Elwood Scott announced the 1984 honor parts. Timothy J. Hubert, Valedictorian; Kristy Clark, Salutatorian; Lisa Collett, First Honor and Kenneth Nagle, Second Honor.
    Remodeling — JC Penney Company in downtown Houlton has announced plans to remodel its department store at its present location. Store manager, Norman Hatin stated the company will remodel, demonstrating they are a fashion department store and will merchandise to satisfy the needs and tastes of customers. The store has been in business in Houlton since 1938.
    Bedwell — Coach Jesse Bedwell, who coached the Southern Aroostook Community High School Warriors to a State Class D championship in basketball has submitted his resignation. He has been a coach for 22 years.
    Hodgdon — Students, Jim Hemore, Donna Wellington, Mark Drew, Rhonda Dow, Tina Malone and Laurine Hartley have been selected for Dirigo Girls and Boys State.
    Bartley featured — Eugene Bartley, owner of Steelstone Industries and Bartley Builders has been featured in a story published in the January 1984 edition of “The New England Truck World” magazine. Mr. Bartley’s story is described as a “most successful and extensive earth moving, building construction, concrete and bituminous asphalt operation in Northern Maine’s Aroostook County.”
