Mars Hill – Robert Wilmont Alexander, 84, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Mars Hill on May 18, 1924, son of Harold and Gladys (Brown) Alexander. 
He graduated from Aroostook Central Institute, class of 1941. He joined the Air Force in 1944 and was stationed in Texas where he worked on P51’s and P38’s. He also attended the East Coast Aero Tech Academy in Mass., and obtained his pilot’s license after he returned home with more training locally. Upon his return home he went into farming with his father on the family farm. He married Betty Lou Plummer on December 16, 1946, and was married for 57 years at the time of her death in 2004. He later worked for P.T. Tavilla and Cole’s Trucking, was self employed as a T.V. repairman and upon his retirement in 1991, he was employed by the State of Maine as a tower watchmen for the Forestry Department and a dispatcher for the Department of Transportation. He is an honorary member of the Mars Hill FFA and he looked forward to attending the Annual Banquet every year. He was an active member of the First Free Baptist Church of Blaine and was the advisor of the Sound Room for several years. He enjoyed hunting with his five sons, going to John’s camp, and in 2003 at the age of 80 he shot his first moose. He enjoyed the Christmas eve gatherings with family and loved everything about the outdoors, especially when he could whip up a good partridge stew. He was a great cook and thoroughly enjoyed his own cooking. He had many wonderful memories of going on the 4 Wheelers with Pastor and Maurice. (They got into more than one messy or should we say “muddy” situations.)
He is survived by 7 children: Robert and his wife Kristi of Ellsworth, James and his wife Debbie of Old Town, Stephen and his wife Carla of Hampden, Kathy Miller and her husband Max, Tim, Cindy Lovely and her husband Jim all of Mars Hill and John and his wife Debbie of Presque Isle; 16 grand-children: Stephanie and her husband Doug of Bangor, Mary Ann and her husband Bruce Jack, Brett and his wife Jenn all of Ellsworth, Jason of Old Town, Jaime and her husband Robby Tardiff of Mapleton, Adam and his wife Amy of Hermon, Janell and her husband Chip Wood of Levant, Tammy and her fiancée Mike Powell of Virginia, Teena and her husband Lendell Buckingham of Garfield, Tonya, Sarah and Cody all of Mars Hill, John and his wife Rockie of Tennessee, Ben of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Jamie and her husband Charlie McCarthy of Connecticut, Elizabeth and her husband Dave DePauw of Indiana; 26 great-grand-children: Nicholas, Rachel, Alexander, Michael, Emily, Wyatt, Kelsie, Kaylie, Hunter, Austin, Nathaniel, Walter, Jacqueline, Madicine, Abigail, Tristan, Ryan, Heaven, Meagan, Allison, Kayden, Kamron, Sadie, Grace, Bailey, and Lydia; brother-in-law, Luther Smith of Brewer; sister-in-law, Nancy and her husband Roger Durepo of Winter Haven, Florida; niece, Andrea; and nephews, Ronnie Durepo, David and Douglas Smith. He will be greatly missed by the residents of the Orser Street Apartments. Besides his wife he was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Gladys Alexander; his sister, Helen Smith; and one grandson, Robert L. Alexander.
A celebration of his life was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at the First Free Baptist Church of Blaine with Rev. Gardner Smith as officiate. Friends called at the church from 12 noon until time of service. Internment will be at the Boundary Line Cemetery in Bridgewater. Arrangements in care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home in Mars Hill.
