Maine Sports Legends accepting scholarship applications

     It’s time for the Northern Region of the Maine Sports Legends for area senior scholar-athletes to apply for our annual scholarships. Applications have been mailed to all Aroostook Area Guidance Offices. The deadline for an application is May 7, 2009.     The Maine Sports Legends is a state-wide organization dedicated to honoring outstanding scholar-athletes who have met the prescribed standards in academics, has participated in their school’s varsity athletic programs along with possessing good character, completed community and civic involvement and shows strong leadership ability.
    This scholarship of $500.00 is awarded to one male and female from the Aroostook Area and will be awarded solely on the basis of the student’s credentials and shall be made without regard to financial need. There will be eight $500.00 scholarships awarded state-wide. In addition two $1,000.00 scholarships will be awarded to the top male and female chosen by a committee the day of the banquet from the eight state-wide scholar-athletes. This past year in 2008, both the Northern Region scholar/athletes, Spencer McElwain and Karyn King, each were chosen to receive the additional $1,000.00 bringing the total of their scholarship to $1,500.00 each.
    The Northern Area is proud to acknowledge McCain of Easton in 2007 a scholarship donor and in 2006, 2007 and 2008 Katahdin Trust Company has been scholarship donor of $500.00 each. Many other local businesses and individuals in Aroostook County have provided varied financial donations to our scholarship program over the past years.
    Our Northern Region of Sports Legends is looking forward to continuing this relationship with local businesses and individuals for our 2009 scholarships and in the future.
