Everyone has heard of the national ‘Make-A-Wish Foundation’ that grants wishes for children with life- threatening illnesses. The foundation grants a wish every 41 minutes every day to children that are older than thirty months and younger than 18 at the time of referral.  The cost of each wish is $7,000.
This week volunteers and friends of Make-A-Wish in Houlton are teaming with others to put on bake sales in local communities, at schools, offices, churches, stores and community events.
The goal is to create the largest bake sale in the state, while bringing hope, strength and joy to very special wish families.
This local project will be partnering with Betty Crocker’s “Stirring Up Wishes” campaign to raise additional funds to grant a wish.
In addition to the bake sales in the community and eight Mother’s Day baskets, totaling at least $100 in value each, Betty Crocker will award 12 wishes to 12 different Make-A-Wish Chapters across America.
To help Maine qualify for this special wish, consumers are asked to visit the Web site: www.StirringUpWishes.com and place a vote for their Maine chapter. The more votes a chapter secures, the greater the opportunity to receive funding for a wish. Participants may vote once per day and votes will be tallied at the end of the 12-week promotional period. Participants must be a Betty Crocker online member to vote and the membership is free.
Local coordinator, Toni Hetherington has organized a bake sale for Friday and Saturday May 8 and 9 at Scraps on Main Street. The sale will be from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. She has also put together a variety of baskets that are on display at Scraps. Each basket holds a multitude of gift certificates for restaurants, jewelry, garden supplies, tanning, massage, plants, videos, candy and hair salons. The baskets are worth approximately $100 each. Hetherington is very appreciate of generosity of the business people of the community.
Tickets for the baskets are available at Scraps for $2 each or three for $5. The drawing of the baskets will be Saturday, May 9 at 4 p.m. Winning ticket holders, if present will chose their own basket, otherwise winners will be awarded baskets not claimed at the drawing.
