ORONO/BAR HARBOR – The Paul Bunyan Amateur Golf Tournament, to be held June 6 and 7 at Penobscot Valley in Orono and Kebo Valley in Bar Harbor, is attracting the notice of some of Maine’s best Amateur players. “The new 2-day format made it easier for everyone to participate,” says Chad Curley, Head Professional at Penobscot Valley. “And the Maine State Golf Association’s decision to allow the Bunyan to count for points has been important to competitive golfers.”
Already, that decision by the MSGA has made a difference. “We have a lot of MSGA players involved in the Bunyan this year,” adds Peiter DeVos, head professional at Kebo Valley. “Several of them are ranked in the top twenty of points-earners from the last two years.”
Among those top players will be Joseph Alvarez, returning to defend his 2008 Bunyan title.
In addition to the tournament’s new standing with the MSGA, the Bunyan this year will also feature starters, scorers and rules officials at both Kebo and Penobscot Valley, a $30 practice round the Friday before at either facility and special discount overnight packages for tournament participants at the Best Western Black Bear Inn in Orono and the Bluenose Inn in Bar Harbor.
“This is a great event,” says Curley. “It’s a pleasure for us to keep it moving forward.”
