Wildcat athlete of the week
    The Varsity Club and Big Cheese Pizza are pleased to congratulate Alex Carter and MacKenzie Pinette for being selected as athletes of the week for the week of May 11-16. For the fourth consecutive year Carter qualified for the boys state tennis singles competition. Pinette won the 1600 meter race at the track and field meet hosted by Caribou High School.     Tryouts for the Patriots of Aroostook County will be held Sunday, May 31 at 2 p.m. at the Presque Isle High School. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1990 are eligible. For information, call Richard Parsons at 764-7213.
Indoor pool offers swim clinic, CPR course
    The Presque Isle Indoor pool will be offering a swim clinic On June 15 and 17 with John Leber. John has 36 years of swimming and coaching experiences. He has coached several national swimmers. Leber is the assistant varsity swim coach for Presque Isle High School. He is an American Swimming Coach and is certified ASCA Level #3 coach.
    Leber will work on stroke techniques, turns and starts. The clinic will be from 8:30-11 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday and is open to anyone who want to improve their strokes. For more information, contact the indoor pool at 764-2564.
    The indoor pool will be offering an American Red Cross Professional CPR renewal course on June 10 at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. All lifeguards must be certified every year in Professional CPR or Health care provider to have their lifeguard certificate valid. Pre- registration is required. The indoor pool is offering a lifeguard challenge class on June 19 from 9-12 p.m.
NHSC Duathlon
    The Nordic Heritage Center is hosting a run/ride duathlon on Saturday, June 13. The Event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with a 5 kilometer trail run/walk and the 10 kilometer mountain bike ride following at 12 p.m. Registration starts at 8 a.m. in the main lodge that morning and the day concludes with a barbeque at 1 p.m. While the events are held consecutively, they may be registered for individually as they are two separate events. Participants can do the run/walk or mountain bike, or both events for a combined time. Donations will benefit the UMPI ski team and the duathlon is sponsored by the Nordic Heritage Sports Club. Nordic Heritage Center Celebrates National Trails Day
    The Nordic Heritage Sport Club, in conjunction with Maine Winter Sports Center, is inviting the general public to celebrate National Trails Day on June 6.
    The Nordic Heritage Sport Club (NHSC) promotes healthy outdoor recreation and economic vitality in Central Aroostook County by providing first-class facilities and programs to area residents, athletes, and visitors. Known for hosting world-class cross country and biathlon events during the winter months, the Nordic Heritage Center also features a plethora of warm weather trails and activities.
    Through its’ National Trails Day Festival, NHSC hopes to provide a chance for area residents to get to know the Nordic Heritage Center. Beginning at 9:00 am, those interested can participate in free Nordic walking, mountain bike, and trail running guided tours for all abilities. Geocaching and orienteering treks will also be offered, followed by a free BBQ from 11:00 am – Noon.
    Families and individuals of all ages and abilities welcome. This is a great opportunity to explore the summer trails at the Nordic Heritage Center. Beaver Basketball Camp
    The Beaver Basketball Camp will be held at the Washburn Elementary Gym from June 15-18, from 5-7 p.m. each day. Beaver Basketball Camp is directed by Larry Worcester, and will be available to boys and girls currently in grades 4-8. Fundamentals necessary to become an outstanding basketball player will be emphasized. The camp will offer individual and group drill stations, instructional games, and skill competitions. Several awards will be presented at the conclusion of the clinic and the first 40 campers to register will receive a Beaver basketball t-shirt. The fee is $40 per player.
