Well, what can I say? The weather is still the topic. Had two beautiful days and now today is beautiful again and Ol Sol is with us. Aren’t we all happy!
Shirley Nason’s sister is here from Florida. Shirley is enjoying her and they have been doing some things together, as sisters do.
The Southern RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) Gazette is in the mail, Gini Garrett reporting. Gini stated in her information about the new senior group starting August 11. The first meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a potluck/finger foods, then at noon an organizational meeting to discuss officers. For more information, you may call Connie Barry at 532-7556 of Mildred Reece at 532-3122.
We miss Cruz-Cruz. She is one of the steadies at Good as New. She recently had surgery and is on the mend, I’m told. Cruz is another go-getter in more ways than one.
Alice McQuarrie has returned to a hospital in Portland, following another stroke. She was at the home of her daughter Mary. We pray for Alice and her recovery.
Peggy Robinson has returned from Florida a few weeks ago. She attended her son’s wedding and had a wonderful time. Peggy’s mother, Arlene Friel, is celebrating a birthday this week.
Dean Richardson turned 70 in June! Dean always teases me—when am I going to see my name in the paper!! Now, here it is, Dean and we hope you had a wonderful birthday!
Eugene McMonigle, formerly of Ricker Plaza and now at Madigan, had his three nieces visit from New Hampshire over the Fourth of July. The nieces and nephews are so special and good to Eugene. We are always happy to see them.
Donna Burns spent a day with her sister-in-law and family at a nearby cottage in Aroostook County on Saturday. Donna says it was nice to see the children and all of her relatives there since it was three years since her last visit.
Rita McDade reported that her mother’s celebration of 100 years was a lovely time. Everybody was there except two of her sons. Monique Beaulieu reached the century mark! What a great lady.
Carolyn Carmichael had her grandson visiting and she took him home on Sunday. The grandson lives in Woodland, Aroostook County.
Parking places were rare in the park where McGill’s Band played last Thursday. I haven’t been to a concert this season because of other commitments, but I miss them and they sound so great.
My ending for this day is taken from Proverbs 22:1: “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
Enjoy the good sunshine, stay healthy and walk, walk, walk!
TOPS #ME 233, Houlton
Take Off Pounds Sensibly, Chapter 233, of Houlton, met at the Aldergate building on High Street on July 10. It was the first meeting since June 26. On this date, the dues increased to $2, from $1, as voted many weeks ago.
For the June 26 meeting Gerry McAfee was the loser of the week.
For July 10, 15 TOPS ladies were weighed with four KOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly). Loser of the week was Melva Folsom with Aileen Smith as runner-up.
At the July 10 meeting, the skinny dish was the only drawing of the day. Melva Folsom was the winner. The mystery gift and 50/50 drawings were eliminated a few weeks ago, by vote.
Janette Nelson gave a financial report, always an up-to-date list of our finances.
Leader, Joyce Estey had charge of the meeting. She told the group that the camera our chapter owns is in the new closet and locked. Before her comments, we had roll call and each lady told her status as a TOPS or a KOPS.
Charlotte Marley did the program for the week. The subject was water and a skit was performed, which Charlotte led. Other participants were Aileen Smith, Linda Cassidy, Barbara Whited, Linda Bartlett, Brenda Lacostic, Kay Grass, Lois Downing, Janette Nelson and leader Joyce Estey. It was comical and urged us all to drink our water for really good reasons.
At the end of the meeting, Charlotte urged all members to challenge a member—that is to call a member, new or young and just to keep in touch. The phone calls helps one another in more ways than you can imagine.
Before the meeting ended, Lois Downing led the group in a few minutes of exercises. Exercises will be at the ending of our meeting in the future, at the suggestion of Barbara Grant.
Lois took the place of Barbara Troy, absent for the day. Lois also distributed a ditty from the paper about memory that caught her eye.
Linda Trickey, a representative of the USDA, and a favorite with many members, will have charge of the program July 17. Joyce will be away for this meeting and Brenda Lacostic will perform her duties.
The weigh-in is every Friday, unless it is a holiday, from 8-8:45 a.m. The meeting starts at 9 o’clock and usually lasts an hour.
If you want to join and need more information about the chapter, you may call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey at 532-9653. Everybody is welcome.
Happy Losers
On July 8 the meeting of the Happy Losers was held at the Congregational Church vestry.
We always open our meeting with our pledge and roll call. We had 15 ladies weigh-in and 14 attended our class. Lois Green was the loser of the week and runners-up were Ann Morse and Winnie Desmond. Great job ladies.
Reports were given by our secretary and treasuer for the week.
Jackie Pratt, our leader led the program for the week. We had a six question quiz. We learned that an average person eats 13 cups of salt a year. The meeting was interesting and informative.
Please feel welcome to our group, every Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. weigh-in and meeting starts at 9:00am Call 365-4884 for info.See you there!
