The 17th annual Island Falls Summerfest 5K Run and 4K Walk will be held Saturday, Aug. 1 with a 9 a.m. start and the half mile race for ages 9 and under will begin at 8:45 a.m.     Participants will gather at the Island Falls Municipal Building (Exit 276 off I-95) and the course will cover roads — paved and gravel – with a water station positioned at the halfway point.
Pre-registration is $10 and registration on race day is $12. Proceeds will be split between the AGAPE Food Pantry and Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
The top overall male and female finishers in the run and walk, along with the first to finish in each category will receive homemade pies. The winners receiving their choice of dozens and dozens of delicious homemade pies is one reason this race is such a draw.  There will also be random drawings for over 40 door prizes as well.
A big hit with the run/walk is the homemade pie auction held after the race, around 10:30 a.m.  Most of the best cooks in the area, according to race director John Walker, look forward each year to making a pie or two for this, maybe the County’s largest, running/walking event.
Last year, the race drew 89 participants, with Alfred Hanscom of Limestone and Angela Ewings of Littleton finishing as overall winners.
