The first student day for SAD 42 will be on Tuesday, Aug. 11, according to Superintendent of Schools Roger Shaw. A Workshop for teachers will be held on Monday, Aug. 10, at 8 a.m. in the Music Room at Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School. Lunch will be served.
New students to the area may register for the Jr/Sr High School (7-12) classes at the school on August 3-7 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Guidance Office. Parents wishing to register pre-K through grade 6 students may do so at Fort Street Elementary School on August 3 through 7 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The bus schedule will remain the same as last year. Hot lunches will be available beginning the first day of school at a price of $1.75 at the elementary school and $2 at the Jr/Sr high school. Reduced priced meals are $.40 cents for all qualifying students at both schools.
A breakfast program is also offered at both the elementary and Jr/Sr high schools.
Breakfast prices are $1.15 for both schools or free for qualifying students. (Applications must be approved prior to receiving free or reduced meals. Only one application per family is required.)

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, July 28, at 6:30 a.m. The special speaker was Dr. Harold Jones of UMPI. He spoke of the way he believes that students learn best — by using a cognitive model. This allows students to think about problems or issues and work out responses for themselves, not for rewards.
He believes that the “No Child Left Behind” idea has some parts that are OK, but that the implementation is wrong. It is impossible for all students to achieve the same scores on a test.
On Wednesdays, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., the library will hold cribbage games, so bring your friends and your boards. The more the merrier. This has been changed from Saturday mornings, at least through the summer and fall.

Knit or crochet on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 – 7:30 at the library. Enjoy each other’s company while you work on your chosen project.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, the BHA will hold a Potluck Supper and Game Night. The supper will begin at 4:30 p.m. Please bring a dish to share with your friends and neighbors. Water, soda and coffee will be available at the hall.
After supper, join in for an evening of games. There will be a variety of games available or you can bring your own. Some games at the hall include Scrabble, Pit, Yahtzee and cards.
Don’t forget about Wednesday Night Line Dancing classes from 7-8:30 p.m. There is also Live Music on Thursday nights from 6-9 p.m. where you can practice your newly-learned dance moves.
